ROCHESTER, N.Y. — UR Medicine’s breast imaging center in Henrietta has installed a new mammography machine that uses cutting-edge technology.
The machine at Highland Breast Imaging at Red Creek does contrast-enhanced mammograms, critical for patients with dense breast tissue or with a history of breast cancer. It uses dye, similar to a CT scan, to create contrast-enhanced images that make breast cancer easier to detect.
“I can’t tell you how often I do a biopsy and the biopsy shows breast cancer. And I’m so glad that that patient got her yearly screening so I can find it when it was very early and very manageable,” said Dr. Jennifer Harvey, Chair of Imaging Sciences at UR Medicine.
The new machine comes amid Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Women at average risk of breast cancer should start screening at age 40, but women with a family history or known gene mutation should start screening earlier, according to the American Cancer Society.
