Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said ”Turkey is maintaining communication with Syria “across all fields and at every level,” stressing Ankara’s determination to “strengthen coordination and close cooperation to safeguard the gains of Syria and the region.”
Speaking to journalists on his return from the “Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit” in Egypt on Tuesday, October 14, Erdoğan was asked whether he had information about the imminent start of integrating the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) into the Syrian army, amid reports of contacts between the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and SDF delegations in Damascus. He was also asked whether such integration would occur immediately or gradually.
Erdoğan replied that Turkey “does not leave Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and his colleagues on their own,” noting that communication between the two sides is ongoing. He said Ankara constantly warns the SDF against taking “wrong paths,” calling on it to “support Syria’s unity and territorial integrity.”
“We hope they adopt a position aligned with the goal of a prosperous and unified future for Syria,” he said.
The Turkish president considered that “achieving integration of the SDF with the Syrian state as soon as possible would speed up development steps in Syria,” praising what he described as the “Syrian administration’s orientation toward a future that includes all ethnic and religious components in the country,” which he said “serves the interests of both Syria and Turkey.”
Concluding his remarks, Erdoğan addressed what he called “parties seeking to drag Syria back into the furnace of conflict,” saying they “wish no good for Kurds, Druze, or Alawites.” He added: “Those who turn to Ankara and Damascus will gain; those who seek other patrons will lose.”
Turkey’s patience is “not weakness”
Erdoğan urged the SDF to fulfill its commitments and complete its integration with Syrian institutions.
On October 8, he said Turkey’s “patient, wise, and generous” stance toward the SDF should not be seen as a point of weakness, according to Reuters.
He stressed that the People’s Protection Units (YPG), the largest component of the SDF, is not adhering to the March 10 agreement, claiming it is acting “under incitement” from Israel.
Erdoğan added that “the alliance between Turks, Kurds, and Arabs is the key to lasting peace and security in the region.”
He affirmed that Turkey and Damascus agree on preserving Syria’s territorial integrity.
He also said Turkey will never allow Syria to slide into a vortex of instability, is closely monitoring developments on the ground, and will continue to stand with the Syrian people.
Calls for the SDF to surrender weapons
Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler called on the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and its offshoots, especially in Syria, to halt what he described as “terrorist activities.”
On October 11, Güler said, “The PKK and all its affiliated groups must immediately stop all their terrorist activities.”
He added, “All its extensions operating under different names across various geographies, especially in Syria, must surrender their weapons immediately and unconditionally.”
The minister stressed that Turkey will not allow what he termed “terrorist organizations,” notably the PKK, the YPG, and the SDF, to take root in the region or operate under different names in neighboring countries.
