This ‘Brady Bunch’ Episode Was Suddenly Changed After a Cast Member’s Scary Accident—Here’s Why

The Brady Bunch was flying through its final season when a cast member’s real-life accident spawned a script change.

In November 1973, during filming for the Season 5 episode “Out of This World,” series star Barry Williams was involved in head-on collision while driving his Porsche 356 through his neighborhood.  The actor suffered injuries to his face, so when he showed up to work the following Monday, producers scrambled to work it into the script.

The episode, which features Williams’ character Greg playing a UFO-related practical joke on brothers Peter (Christopher Knight) and Bobby (Mike Lookinland), originally aired on January 18, 1974, on ABC.

In several scenes, Greg is seen with an awkwardly placed bandage on his lip. In one scene filmed in the Brady kitchen, housekeeper Alice (Ann B. Davis) asks, “What’d you do to your lip?”

“I cut myself shaving,” Greg replies.

Peter then chimes in to say, “Every time he looks in the mirror, he gets carried away with himself.”

Greg then tells his brothers, “Don’t make me laugh. My lip.”

It’s the last anyone hears of Greg’s shaving faux pas, although his bandage is seen in other scenes in the episode.

Williams addressed the accident in his 1992 book, Growing Up Brady: I Was a Teenage Greg. “You'll notice that Greg's got a Band-Aid draped over his bottom lip,” Williams wrote. “I had merely put my face through the front window of my Porsche and needed the bandage to cover up my unsightly stitches.”

When he showed up to The Brady Bunch set the following Monday, Williams was afraid he would be cut from the episode because his face was cut up. But producer Lloyd Schwartz came up with another idea.

“Once I got to the lot, Lloyd Schwartz took one look at my lip, promptly squealed, ‘Eww, yuck’ and decided that Greg had cut himself shaving,” Williams wrote.

The actor joked that he wondered if Greg shaved with a lawnmower.

Williams addressed the filler scene in an episode of The Real Brady Bros. podcast. The actor explained that a distracted woman in a station wagon plowed right into him on a residential road on Thanksgiving Day 1973.

“I was launched into the windshield, which I cracked with my forehead, but split my lip on the steering wheel. So it literally tore my lower lip down to the chin,” he said. “That Band-Aid was covering like 12 stitches.”

“If they did that episode today, they would have just CGI’d it right out of there,” Wiliams noted.

The Brady Bunch star revealed that he later underwent two scar revision surgeries to repair his lip.
