The saying goes that revenge is a dish best served cold, but for Alden Parker (Gary Cole), who is out for payback against Carla Marino (Rebecca De Mornay) for the murder of his father on the two-part Season 23 premiere of NCIS, it can’t come soon enough. And it is definitely revenge he is seeking, not justice, even though he wears a badge.
“The writers did a phenomenal job of paying attention to all the Easter eggs that we had in our season finale and making sure that everything was answered on the season premiere,” Wilmer Valderrama, who plays Nick Torres, tells Parade.

“We all talked to each other, we all talked to the writers, we’re all wishfully thinking, ‘This is going to happen, right? Because it has to happen this way, because there’s no other way, you know?’ We really collaborated on what is the best possible outcome. Not for the team and not for NCIS, but what is the possible outcome for our friend? And that is going to cost people, it’s also going to call for all of us to put the badge aside and go rogue, but we’re out for revenge and we’ll see if we get it.”
So, the team – Nick, Timothy McGee (Sean Murray), Jessica Knight (Katrina Law), Kasie Hines (Diona Reasonover) and Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) — are all in to aid Parker in his quest. Even as along the way, they learn a lot about their boss, including the fact that his sister, Harriet Parker (Nancy Travis), is a Navy Vice Admiral from who he’s estranged.

“He’s such an exciting character, such a great addition to NCIS mothership, he’s everything that this show embodies and he’s done a beautiful job as an actor to continue to elevate the leadership on the show,” Valderrama continues. “He’s just an amazing person, so I’m very happy that we’ve dedicated two major episodes to really deepen our relationship as audiences with Parker, but also really deepen his roots within the NCIS legacy. And we do it in a really exciting, really fun way, and we get in a lot of crazy trouble.”

That crazy trouble is part of the theme for the season, which, according to showrunner Steven D. Binder, is NCIS on fire, and Valderrama promises that the season is going to be hot.

“What he means is that we’re bringing big guns to tell big stories,” Valderrama says of the talent that will be making cameos this season, especially characters from the past. “Dynamically the show’s going to look a little different, too. We’re going to try something different with the cinematic feeling of the show. Origins has been doing it, but NCIS is a nostalgic look always, you know? So, we’re going to play with extra cameras, we’re going to cover the scenes a little bit crazier now, so we’re having a lot of fun with this new vibe and this new energy on set.”
NCIS moves back to its original Tuesday night at 8 p.m. ET/PT timeslot when it returns for its Season 23 premiere tonight on CBS. Streams next day on Paramount+.
