Young batter Sai Sudharsan has revealed his excitement about winning his maiden Test series with the Indian team and has shed light on his inspirational journey with the side over 5 games so far in his career. He also hinted at his future role as India's next No. 3 in red-ball cricket.
India made their commanding comeback to the longest format of the game after Gautam Gambhir faced initial criticism for his tactics being a total disaster in the red-ball format. India crashed out of a spot in the WTC Final for the first time in 2025, but then came Shubman Gill.
The Indian youngster was appointed the captain at the start of this WTC cycle, and he led by example, scoring runs and showing composure as well as aggression, as and when needed. Gill has evolved to be a great character with the Captain's band.
Under Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir's shade, Gujarat Titans batter Sai Sudharsan made a Test debut in England following his promising run in the IPL 2025. However, the batter's debut series was not a great success. The skipper backed him for the next series against the West Indies and Sudharsan, though he didn't fire at his best, yet looked confident this time around.
The young left-hander has expressed his desire to contribute more to his national team after contributing handsomely to India's win against the West Indies in the second Test match.
"It feels really great to be honest. After a good series where we gave them a fight (in England), coming back to India and winning the series is special," said Sai Sudharsan.
He admitted to having learned a lot in the five matches he has played so far in his Test career, and his growing proficiency has also been reflected in his batting, as the Southpaw managed to score 87 and 39 across the two innings against the West Indies in Delhi.
"I've learned a lot in these five games, and I'm looking forward to improving on that, and obviously giving a bit more for the team. Understanding the role, understanding what a number 3 must do, learning to take responsibility and bat in a risk-free manner (on his learnings going forward)," he added.
"I was very brave enough to, you know, hold my position," Sai Sudharsan flaunts bravery on a freak catch
After sharing his learning experiences from the England tour as well as the recent matches against the West Indies, Sai Sudharsan turned to boasting of his courage and grit. He took reference from the massive blow he sustained to his chest after being hit by a traveling ball from John Campbell's bat.
The ball kept low, and despite that, Campbell kept sweeping; hence, it is clear that nothing went as per Sudharsan's thoughts. He has also thanked his fortune for being saved this time around.
"I was very clear that he would not sweep (on the catch to dismiss John Campbell in the 1st innings), the wicket was low and I knew he'll not play the sweep shot, so I was very brave enough to, you know, hold my position. I was very lucky there," Sudharsan was quoted during the post-match interview.
"The way he captains, and the way he gives beliefs to the players, I think it's really great" - Sudharsan on Shubman Gill's captaincy
Lastly, Sai Sudharsan went on to heap praise on his Gujarat Titans teammate and skipper, Shubman Gill. Sudharsan has played a lot of cricket alongside Gill in the IPL and has saluted his abilities both as a batter and as the captain of the team.
"I've played a lot with Shuby (Shubman Gill). The way he captains, and the way he gives beliefs to the players, I think it's really great. Looking forward to having a lot more opportunities," concluded Sudharsan.
Moreover, reports have suggested that Sai Sudharsan has been backed by skipper Gill, who has shown immense faith in his abilities, despite his poor returns.
