Blackhawks 3, Mammoth 1 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

The first period happened, I promise. The Blackhawks out-shot the Mammoth 6-5. The lights went out — literally — at one point. And only one shot was close to going in. On the plus side, the Blackhawks stayed out of box for 18 of the 20 minutes.

It took almost 11 minutes for the Blackhawks to put a shot on net in the second period, but they quickly put a couple on net and one of them slipped thru the Utah netminder and gave the Hawks the first goal of the night. When the horn sounded to end the second, the Blackhawks were out-shot 13-3 in the period but scored the only goal.

Utah tied the game only 62 seconds into the third period when the Hawks got caught scrambling around the net and the puck found JJ Peterka all alone on the back door for an easy snipe. The Blackhawks got a power play in the middle of the period and André Burakovsky found the back of the net to give the Blackhawks the lead. That goal stood up as the game-winner.

The Blackhawks have one in the win column, folks!

    Star 1: Ilya Mikheyev

I feel like hockey gods owed Mikheyev a little something after he skated 7:48 short-handed on Saturday night. He was an absolute warrior. So when he got the puck behind the net and it got under Vitek Vanecek for his first of the year, it just felt right. He added a goal into the empty net with five seconds left for a two-goal performance.

    Star 2: Jason Dickinson

Dickinson won three of five faceoffs in the first period. The rest of the team won three of 13. The numbers got slightly better in the second period: Dickinson won three of five again while the rest of the roster won six of mine. At the end of two periods, Dickinson had won half of his eight defensive zone faceoffs; his teammates won two of eight. There were a few instances of Dickinson taking a defensive zone faceoff, winning it, and then got off the ice for another forward to get on the ice.

Thru two periods — with the Blackhawks getting out-shot 18-9 — Dickinson had an expected Goals For percentage of 65.73, which was third-best on the team behind Sam Rinzel and his linemate, Ryan Donato. In 8:46 of ice time thru two periods, the Blackhawks were out-shooting the Mammoth 5-2 with Dickinson on the ice (which means they were getting out-shot 16-4 with him on the bench). He also had the primary assist on Mikheyev’s goal. The Blackhawks are a better overall team with a healthy Dickinson in the lineup.

    Star 3: Spencer Knight

The Blackhawks were completely overwhelmed in the second period but Knight stood tall and kept the Mammoth from putting a crooked number on the board. He finished the night stopping 22 of 23 shots on net to pick up the first win of the new year.

    Key Takeaways

Here’s the Burakovsky power play goal:

    — BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) October 14, 2025 Go back and watch the video of the Mikheyev goal again. Find something in your life you can be as excited about as Artyom Levshunov was about that goal going in! The Blackhawks didn’t have to kill a penalty until Louis Crevier went off for tripping at 7:24. They took only one penalty in the second period (Rinzel for delay of game) and successfully killed that one, too. Connor Bedard took one with around eight minutes left in regulation. Baby steps. Colton Dach was a wrecking ball all night. He had one assist and a team-leading seven hits in the game. After a couple solid games, Ryan Greene looked more timid tonight. Maybe it was because he was floating without a regular line because the Blackhawks went with seven defensemen, maybe it was a little bit of the matchups he was drawing against a solid Utah lineup. But not quite the same attack from Greene tonight. With six minutes left in the first period, the lights went out on the ice in the middle of play. Haven’t seen that before!

The lights went out mid-play at the United Center. That was funny. Jeff Blashill was laughing on the bench. #Blackhawks pic.twitter.com/7pM5SYPTSK
