Two accused of abandoning dog in Ontario County

PHELPS, N.Y. – Two people from Geneva are facing charges for allegedly abandoning a dog named Ivy.

The Ontario County Humane Society said the 2- to 3-year-old red pit bull was found walking along Johnson Road in Phelps and the vicinity for 10 days in August. She would run away when anyone approached. A good Samaritan captured her in a humane trap and took her to a vet, where she was found to be at least 20 pounds underweight.

Latoyia Soler and Michael Russell have been charged with animal abandonment. An investigation revealed that they were moving and not able to take her with them, and they were unsuccessful in trying to re-home her. The Humane Society said neither were actively looking for Ivy nor did they attempt to obtain her from the shelter after learning she was there. They will appear later in Hopewell Town Court.

The couple signed ownership of the dog over to the shelter. Once Ivy is medically cleared, she will be put up for adoption.
