A victory over a nationally ranked Big Sky Conference opponent over the weekend has earned national recognition for the University of Northern Colorado football team.
The Bears were named the Stats Perform FCS National Team of the Week on Monday, two days after their 49-33 win over No. 11 Idaho on Saturday in Moscow, Idaho.
The win was arguably the biggest for the program under current head coach Ed Lamb, who is in his third season. UNC is 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the Big Sky Conference.
Idaho (2-4, 0-2) dropped out of the top 25 in one Football Championship Subdivision poll following the loss to the Bears. The Vandals were 24th in another poll.
UNC scored 35 first-half points against the Vandals on the way to scoring the most points in a single game since Lamb took over in late 2022.
The Bears’ defense held Idaho to 14 points in the first half. The Vandals came into the game averaging 25 points per game, but played without starting quarterback Joshua Wood, who was injured.
The 49 points scored by UNC was the most for the program since September 2021 in a 45-13 win over then Houston Baptist (now Houston Christian).

Chapa led the Bears with 10 tackles and he was named the Big Sky Conference defensive player of the week Monday. He also earned honorable mention recognition from Stats Perform FCS as national defensive player of the week.
UNC plays another road game Saturday at Sacramento State (2-3, 0-1 Big Sky). The Hornets received votes in two national polls as of Oct. 11, but are not included in the top 25. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN+ and Pirate Radio out of Fort Collins.
