Big 12 power rankings: BYU, Cincinnati and Utah rise as Arizona State slips

The Big 12 power rankings are published weekly by the Hotline throughout the regular season. They are the result of a deep dive into the analytics, an assessment of subjective factors and, when necessary, flips of the coin. No conference has more parity. The parity leads to chaos, and the chaos creates an endlessly compelling product that is not always easy to unscramble.

(Here are last week’s rankings.)

    All times Pacific

    1. Texas Tech (6-0/3-0)

Result: beat Kansas 42-17 Next up: at Arizona State (1 p.m. on Fox) Comment: Quarterback Behren Morton is considered day-to-day with an injury suffered Saturday that forced him to miss the second half. Which means there could be two wobbly QBs in the Tempe showdown. (Previous: 1)

    2. Brigham Young (6-0/3-0)

Result: won at Arizona 33-27 (2OT) Next up: vs. Utah (5 p.m. on Fox) Comment: Two things, equally true: The Cougars have been extremely fortunate in close games for the past season-and-a-half; and they generate a substantial amount of that good fortune with smart, sound execution. (Previous: 4)

    3. Cincinnati (5-1/3-0)

Result: beat UCF 20-11 Next up: at Oklahoma State (5 p.m. on ESPN2) Comment: Two months ago, Scott Satterfield occupied perhaps the hottest seat in the Big 12. Now, he’s the frontrunner for conference coach of the year. (Previous: 5)

    4. Utah (5-1/2-1)

Result: beat ASU 42-10 Next up: at BYU (5 p.m. on Fox) Comment: Moving the Holy War to the middle of October was a super smart move by the Big 12. In future years, the conference needs to make sure the combatants have byes the week before the game, as well. Fresher teams and more hype never hurt. (Previous: 7)

    5. Arizona State (4-2/2-1)

Result: lost at Utah 42-10 Next up: vs. Texas Tech (1 p.m. on Fox) Comment: ASU’s point total Saturday night made perfect sense given the absence of quarterback Sam Leavitt. But Utah’s total was a bit surprising. The Sun Devils’ defense better locate its tenacity this week, or brace for another bad loss.  (Previous: 2)

    6. TCU (4-2/1-2)

Result: lost at Kansas State 41-28 Next up: vs. Baylor (9 a.m. on ESPN2) Comment: Increasingly possible that the highlight of TCU’s season came the first Monday of the first month, when the Horned Frogs trounced a terrible team led by a washed-up coach. (Previous: 3)

    7. Iowa State (5-2/2-2)

Result: lost at Colorado 24-17 Next up: idle Comment: Add Iowa State’s loss in Boulder to the not-so-short list of surprising results in the Big 12 thus far. Although back-to-back road games — the Cyclones lost at Cincinnati the previous week — are difficult for everyone everywhere, always. (Previous: 6)

    8. Baylor (4-2/2-1)

Result: did not play Next up: at TCU (9 a.m. on ESPN2) Comment: Speaking of back-to-back roadies, the Bears are in Fort Worth this week, then head to Cincinnati. A split would feel like a sweep. (Previous: 8)

    9. Arizona (4-2/1-2)

Result: lost to BYU 33-27 (2OT) Next up: at Houston (9 a.m. on FS1) Comment: The Wildcats are half of what they were in 2023 and twice what they were in 2024, and that should be good enough for six wins but probably not seven. (Previous: 9)

    10. Kansas (4-3/2-2)

Result: lost at Texas Tech 42-17 Next up: idle Comment: The Jayhawks opened as 3.5-point underdogs against Kansas State in two weeks. Our hunch: The line will close with KU as 4.5-point dogs as money follows the Avery Johnson mystique. (Previous: 10)

    11. Houston (5-1/2-1)

Result: won at Oklahoma State 39-17 Next up: vs. Arizona (9 a.m. on FS1) Comment: Willie Fritz is a contender for Big 12 Coach of the Year, as well. But if form holds, the coaches might reward Cincinnati’s Satterfield because his seat was so hot when the season began. (Previous: 11)

    12. Kansas State (3-4/2-2)

Result: beat TCU 41-28 Next up: idle Comment: The Wildcats are playing well enough to avoid becoming this season’s Oklahoma State and could end up as this season’s Kansas State — meaning, a respectable record but untapped potential. (Previous: 12)

    13. Colorado (3-4/1-3)

Result: beat Iowa State 24-17 Next up: idle Comment: The victory was desperately needed, but the bowl math remains tricky. The Buffaloes get Utah in two weeks, with the Utes likely experiencing a post-Holy War letdown. Can CU take advantage? (Previous: 13)

    14. UCF (3-3/0-3)

Result: lost at Cincinnati 20-11 Next up: vs. West Virginia (10 a.m. on TNT) Comment: A winless conference season is unlikely for Scott Frost, thanks to home dates with both the Mountaineers and Oklahoma State. (Previous: 14)

    15. West Virginia (2-4/0-3)

Result: did not play Next up: at UCF (10 a.m. on TNT) Comment: Parity might be the Big 12’s calling card, but the conference benefits from having a few bad teams. That’s more wins available for the good ones. (Previous: 15)

    16. Oklahoma State (1-5/0-3)

Result: lost to Houston 39-17 Next up: vs. Cincinnati (5 p.m. on ESPN2) Comment: What once would have been unimaginable is hurtling toward reality: The Cowboys could go two full seasons without a conference victory. (Previous: 16)
