Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford Reveal Dream West Wing Cameo for The Diplomat (Exclusive)

When The Diplomat returns for Season 3 on Thursday, Oct. 16, fans of The West Wing will be in for the reunion of a lifetime. The calculating Grace Penn (Allison Janney) has gone from Vice President to Commander-in-Chief in one fell swoop, presenting quite the headache for Kate (Keri Russell) and company.

But she won't be alone in this new job. Standing alongside her, both literally and emotionally, is her husband, Todd (Bradley Whitford). It's an exciting new showcase of the relationship between Janney and Whitford, who have remained close friends following their seven-season run as C.J. Cregg and Josh Lyman, respectively, on the hit Aaron Sorkin political series.

Even before Whitford made his way onto the thriller series, there's plenty of connective tissue between the two shows. Debora Cahn was a writer and producer on the final four seasons of The West Wing. She then went on to work on Grey's Anatomy and Homeland before creating The Diplomat in 2023.

While little is known about the relationship between Grace and Todd, both Janney and Whitford have already been confirmed to be promoted to main cast members in Season 4. So, with the Penns in the picture for the foreseeable future, Parade had to ask which other West Wing alum they would want to see join their metaphoric Oval Office on Netflix.

"Wow. There are so many," Janney replies, appropriately diplomatically. "There are so many people. I think we'd have to draw names out of a hat."

Whitford, however, disagrees, eager to use this as an opportunity to continue a long-running feud.

"I'd like to see Josh Malina just do a very deep background pass," he says. "I want you to miss it."

Janney responds in uproarious laughter. "That's the perfect answer."

Malina joined The West Wing in Season 4 as speechwriter Will Bailey. But as his character ascended through the ranks on the show, there was one role he occupied his entire run behind the scenes: Prankster. In one notable incident, he used Whitford's personal stationery to send flowers to new cast member Jimmy Smits, asking him to be his valentine. In response, Whitford forced Malina to say, "I can't act. I'm a terrible actor," in an episode that he wrote.

While The West Wing came to an end in 2006, this rivalry has not. Over 20 years, the two men have poked fun at each other through various social media posts and interviews. This, apparently, seems to be another instance.

"We're a very close group," Whitford explains, trying to get away from the crack. "We're in communication." But his on-screen wife wasn't letting him off the hook anytime soon.

"I'm texting him you said that right now," she interrupts.

We shall see in due time if Malina has a response to Whitford's mention of him, or if this "blink-so-you-miss-it" cameo could actually come to fruition at some point.
