Hendricks, 35, has posted a 4.79 ERA over 159.2 innings with the Angels this year, the only of his 12 big league seasons spent with a team other than the Cubs. That ERA and his 4.67 FIP are about 10-15% below league average when accounting for ballpark factors, so he’s hardly been a disaster. But with teams unlikely to commit much in the way of guaranteed dollars for a back-end starter when they might prefer to give those innings to a young, cost-controlled player, you could understand why the future might be murky for Hendricks even if he wanted to continue pitching.

Hendricks is one of the most beloved Cubs in recent memory, and I’d hope there is a job waiting for him with the Cubs organization if he wants to go that route. Talk about a guy who can bring so much insight and a wealth of experience.
