DENVER (KDVR) — The Lakewood Police Department is asking people to avoid an "unsafe" area after an agitated bull elk and its herd were spotted around Union Ridge Park.
Just after 9 a.m. on Monday, police posted photos on social media of a herd of elk spotted in Union Ridge Park at 500 Zang Street in Lakewood. Police said Lakewood Animal Control is overseeing the herd, where the bull is "agitated" and the area is "unsafe."
"We are asking that you avoid the area until the herd is able to move on and settle. While this herd certainly is beautiful, they can also pose a risk to humans that get too close," police said on social media.
The National Park Service advises using the "rule of thumb" when it comes to wildlife. If you can see the animal and cover it with your thumb, you're a safe distance, which is usually at least 25 yards from most wildlife and 100 yards from predators.
