The Michigan Wolverines boast the biggest stadium in US Sports with 107,600 fans able to cram into their Ann Arbor home.
Penn State’s Beaver Stadium isn’t far behind at 106,572, and a $700 million redevelopment could see it take top spot if architects can cram in just over a thousand more seats.
Things are not going well on the field for the Nittany Lions, with head coach James Franklin fired after 12 seasons at a cost of almost $50 million after a three-game losing streak.
Beaver Stadium — named after James A. Beaver, who was wounded four times while fighting for the Union Army before going on to become the Governor of Pennsylvania — has hosted Penn State since 1960.
Famed for its iconic White Out Games, which could be threatened by the $7 billion Fox Sports deal, the arena has had very little work done to it since 2001, and some parts haven’t been touched for six decades.
In 2024, an expensive facelift was approved thanks to a campaign led by athletic director Pat Kraft. It is supposed to be completed by the start of the 2027 season.
As well as replacing the crumbling press box, more luxury seats are set to be added with the stands raised by 30 feet and moved 100 feet closer to the field, per the plans outlined by Populous.
Thanks to temporary stands, Beaver Stadium is expected to “maintain a capacity of more than 100,000 throughout the renovation project.”
No number has been given for the final capacity, but Penn State’s ‘107k Strong brand’ for a passionate fanbase is built into the team’s core values and would seem to be a reasonable minimum target.
For now, getting things right on the scoreboard is the priority after a humbling loss to Northwestern.
Associate head coach Terry Smith is taking over until the end of the season, but will have to deal with the loss of quarterback Drew Allar for the campaign through injury.
Kraft’s predecessor Sandy Barbour signed Franklin to a 10-year deal worth up to $85 million in 2021.
GettyHappy Valley has been anything but for the Nittany Lions this season[/caption]His buyout is the second biggest in college football history, behind Jimbo Fisher netting $76 million from Texas A&M.
Kraft is confident that he can still lure elite candidates to Happy Valley despite the outlay on removing Franklin and the stadium.
“We have the best college football fans in America, a rich tradition of excellence, significant investments in our program, compete in the best conference in college sports and have a state-of-the-art renovated stadium on the horizon,” Kraft added. “I am confident in our future and in our ability to attract elite candidates to lead our program.”
Adidas ‘involved’ in James Franklin sacking
Local reporter Mike J. Asti has suggested that next year’s sponsor, Adidas, pushed for the axe.
“Source at Penn State: I have been told that Adidas drove the James Franklin firing and are why it happened today. They committed to pay most or all of the money. They also wanted a new coach before recent losses, but they made it hard for anyone at PSU to argue,” he wrote on X.
The sponsorship has come under further scrutiny with Front Office Sports investigating the ‘transformational’ 10-year apparel agreement that begins in 2026, replacing an existing partnership with Nike.
GettyAllar is out for the rest of the season in a huge blow[/caption]It is believed to worth $300 million, but per FOS, some members of the board of trustees are frustrated at not being shown the full offers from Adidas or Nike — claiming they should be allowed to see them under Pennsylvania state law.
The report adds that from 2027, the Adidas contract includes an annual product allotment of $500,000 in retail value for Kraft — a separate pot from the $8 million annual allowance for the athletic department.
Penn State denied any misconduct in a statement that was released on the university website.
“The process of negotiating and securing this deal was handled professionally by the Penn State administration, and in keeping with all of our standards,” read part of the text.
“It was conducted rigorously, with a value-driven review of competing proposals. The Board of Trustees does not currently vote to approve apparel, beverage, multimedia, or similar commercial agreements, however, University trustees were provided summaries of the competing proposals prior to the final agreement.
“Finally, any suggestion about personal benefits for Intercollegiate Athletics executives is patently false. Pat Kraft, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, and his team maintain close working relationships with executives at all major suppliers – official partners and their direct competitors – as a fundamental responsibility of their position. That is their job. Any suggestion to the contrary is reprehensible.
“Board leadership, the University president, and the Athletics Director are unequivocally aligned on both the approach taken and the outcome reached. Penn State is entering this partnership from a position of strength, and it reflects the best overall outcome for our student-athletes, our fans, and the long-term strength of Penn State Athletics.”
“The terms of our agreement with PSU are confidential,” Adidas told FOS.
