Zelensky hopeful for peace in Ukraine after Gaza deal

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope for peace in his country’s war against Russia on Monday, amid Israel and Hamas carrying out phase one of a peace plan proposed by the Trump administration.

“When peace is achieved for one part of the world, it brings more hope for peace in other regions where life is still under threat. In Ukraine, we welcome all the efforts that have led to today’s outcome for the Middle East,” Zelensky said on the social platform X.

Earlier Monday, Hamas released all 20 living hostages, who had been held since the October, 2023 attacks on Israel, to the Red Cross. As part of the deal, Hamas will also release the bodies of 26 deceased hostages, while Israel will release roughly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and partially withdraw troops from Gaza.

President Trump is in Israel on Monday to meet with families of the hostages and speak at the Israeli Knesset. He will then attend a signing ceremony of the peace deal in Egypt.

Zelensky praised Trump in his Monday post, saying the president’s “leadership and determination” have paid off. The two leaders spoke on Sunday regarding the war in Ukraine, with both saying afterward they discussed Washington sending Kyiv long-range Tomahawk missiles.

Last month, Trump pivoted on the conflict, which began when Russia invaded Ukraine in February, 2022. The president said on his Truth Social platform that Ukraine could win the war and regain Russian-occupied territory.

On Monday, Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, said on the platform Telegram that a senior Ukrainian delegation, led by Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko, is on the way to the U.S. Yermak said that main goals of the visit are strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capacity, bolstering its energy infrastructure and imposing new sanctions on Russia.

“Russian aggression remains the last global source of destabilization, and if a ceasefire and peace have been achieved for the Middle East, the leadership and determination of global actors can certainly work for us too, in Ukraine, in Europe,” Zelensky added Monday.
