The Duke of York, aka Prince Andrew, Earl of Inverness and Baron Killyleagh, can now, it would seem, add another name to his clutch of titles: Liar.
Six years ago, in his now infamous Newsnight interview, he looked Emily Maitlis square in the eye and declared that he had no further contact with the convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein after his visit in December 2010, when he flew to New York to end their friendship.
Now, if the latest email unearthed in court documents is correct, it transpires that Andrew wrote to Epstein in February 2011 after a picture was published of the Duke with one of Epstein’s most high-profile victims, the late Virginia Giuffre.
Not only did Andrew tell Epstein to “keep in close touch” but he jovially and – to my mind – utterly tastelessly added: “We’re in this together… and we’ll play some more soon.” What on earth did he mean? It doesn’t sound like “no further contact” to me. And how dense is he to think that he can go on national television vowing one thing when he seems to have been so brazen in 2011?
Surely, now, it is crunch time for the Duke, and indeed the Duchess of York. They cannot be allowed to continue to do untold and unsustainable damage to the monarchy.

But who is prepared to wield the axe? My money is on William.
King Charles has never been that close to Andrew, but he is his big brother. And Charles is a man who is all about harmony – he’s just made a TV show all about it. It’s true that he fell far short of harmony in his marriage to Diana, but he is not someone who enjoys confrontation.
William is one step removed from those brotherly bonds, and he is also a man who is determined to change the monarchy for the better. He is prepared to challenge tradition and defend the institution from becoming irrelevant in this fast-moving world.
Polls suggest there would be widespread public support for Andrew being stripped of his remaining titles. It would require an act of parliament, but it is certainly not impossible. This is something William could push his father to do.
He has already exercised his not inconsiderable influence where his Uncle Andrew is concerned. Three years ago he reportedly told the late Queen that he would refuse to take part in the prestigious Order of the Garter ceremony if Andrew were allowed to be in the procession. He won the argument. Andrew was banished.
Last month, we witnessed William’s extreme disquiet during the Duchess of Kent’s funeral when Andrew repeatedly tried to talk to him. He all but blanked his uncle – and I suspect that is the last time we shall see William allow Andrew anywhere near him. The Duke of York is toxic, and William knows it.
There is, however, a quandary for the Prince of Wales. He is stubborn and determined, but – as we saw last week when he was moved to tears during a conversation with Rhian Mannings, whose husband died by suicide – he does not have a heart of steel. Far from it. And he is very fond of his cousins Beatrice and Eugenie, who adore their parents, in spite of everything that has happened.
Banishing or humiliating Andrew and Fergie would cause the sisters further hurt. And that’s a tough nut for William to crack.
In the end, though, I think he will pile on the pressure for his father to minimise all contact with Andrew and ensure that, to all intents and purposes, the Yorks are banned from public life. Moreover, this avaricious and, it appears, mendacious couple should rightly fear the day that William becomes king.
