Tom Bergeron Credits This Dancing with the Stars Winner for Saving the Show

Former Dancing with the Stars host Tom Bergeron recently reflected on the impact one mirrorball winner has had on the long-running competition series, calling him instrumental in stabilizing the “rickety ship" series.

Marking the 20th anniversary of the ABC competition series on Facebook, Bergeron shared a photo with Alfonso Ribeiro and professional dancer Witney Carson from Season 19, when Ribeiro won a mirrorball trophy. In the post, Bergeron praised Ribeiro for stepping up to co-host during a challenging period for the show.

Bergeron wrote, "This was the Dancing with the Stars season where my friendship with Alfonsi Ribeiro began, which led to my suggesting him as my America's Funniest Home Videos successor & to my applauding the decision to have him take the helm of (the then rickety ship) of DWTS. Both shows are sailing along nicely now (to continue that nautical metaphor) in no small measure to him."

Ribeiro began co-hosting Dancing with the Stars in Season 31, alongside Tyra Banks. Banks replaced Bergeron and his co-host, Erin Andrews, ahead of the series' 2020 season. By Season 32, he and former DWTS pro and two-time mirrorball winner, Julianne Hough, were co-hosts.

Ironically, Ribeiro also took over as host after Bergeron stepped down from America's Funniest Home Videos in 2015 after 15 seasons. He continues the legacy Bergeron left behind as the show airs its newest Season 36.

Tom Bergeron and Alfonso Ribeiro's enduring friendship

Tom Bergeron and Alfonso Ribeiro's personal and professional bond remains strong. In a 2022 interview with Us Weekly, Ribeiro reflected on their enduring friendship.

"He gave me advice when I [began] AFV, which was 'be you,'" Ribeiro revealed. "I think we have enough respect for each other that I want to talk to him as a friend."

"Tom is the best. He always is and always will be near and dear to my heart in every way," he continued.

Ribeiro joked, "I am continuing to build my career on what Tom Bergeron leaves behind. I am very upset he doesn't have a big job now because when all this ends, I have to go to the next job [he vacates]."

Dancing with the Stars airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and Disney+, with episodes available the next day on Hulu.
