No wonder that Tyreek Hill smiled and laughed when his season was over.
Hill was done with the weekly circus in Miami, and the former Super Bowl winner didn’t have to deal with the Dolphins anymore.
Dolphins have a culture problem
“We have guys showing up to players-only meetings late, guys not showing up to players-only meetings,” said Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, after his team fell 29-27 to the Los Angeles Chargers in the final seconds on Sunday.
“Shocked,” Tagovailoa added.
“This is something that we’ve talked about collectively as a team, about being able to finish in games like this where we have the opportunity to win the game.
“And it’s not just one side of the ball. It’s every phase. I’ve contributed with the turnovers. … It’s frustrating to say the least.”
Miami only has one answer after falling to 1-5, and already losing Hill to a season-ending knee injury that will likely impact the remainder of his NFL career.
The Dolphins must slam the ‘reset’ button, fire McDaniel, move on from Tagovailoa, and ignite a full organizational rebuild.
Again.
Tagovailoa isn’t making the playoffs
Miami hasn’t won a playoff game since 2000, when Dave Wannstedt was head coach and Dolphins QB Jay Fiedler beat a young Peyton Manning.
Twenty-five years later, the Dolphins are paying Tagovailoa $212 million to consistently be the second-best QB on the field, while McDaniel is on the verge of falling below .500 as Miami’s head coach.
He’s 29-28 through three-plus seasons, and McDaniel entered Week 1 of the 2025 campaign as one of the NFL coaches most likely to be fired.
The Dolphins’ season has fallen into chaostalksport Tyreek Hill seemed to be excited to be done with MiamiMcDaniel has fallen from a media and fan favorite to a Dolphins leader void of answers.
He alternates between beaten and flippant during press conferences, while Miami is producing the 28th-ranked defense in the NFL (29 points allowed per game) and 18th-ranked offense (22.3 points).
Compare Tagovailoa standing behind a podium and calling out his missing-in-action teammates to the growing bond between Chargers QB Justin Herbert and head coach Jim Harbaugh, and it’s obvious what the Dolphins are lacking.
Something missing with coach and QB
“He’s (Herbert) able to just mighty-man it and shake it off and hit Ladd McConkey,” Harbaugh said. “I’m going to remember that play until they throw dirt over top of me. That’s how great I feel about that.”
The second-year Los Angeles coach added: “Justin Herbert. I mean, he’s like Hercules out there.”
Tagovailoa is completing 69.8 percent of his passes, which is good enough for 10th in the league.

Where’s the offense in Miami?
McDaniel was hired for his offensive acumen and creativity.
Tagovailoa was the No. 5 overall pick of a 2020 draft that featured Joe Burrow at No. 1, Herbert at No. 6, Jordan Love at No. 26 and Jalen Hurts at No. 53.
All four of those other QBs are superior to Tagovailoa, and McDaniel hasn’t done enough to develop a $212m quarterback who’s mission critical to the Dolphins’ success.
Nothing is working in Miami, and the 1-5 Dolphins can’t even get full team participation in players-only meetings.
If Miami falls to the Cleveland Browns — who have more hope with rookie quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders — in a sad battle of one-win teams, McDaniel shouldn’t make it to Week 8.
Stephen Ross is worth $17 billion, but the Dolphins’ owner keeps throwing his cash away on the NFL’s most chaotic team.
