Country Star Confronts Critics After Falling Victim to ‘Brutal’ Online Comments: ‘It’s Pissing Me Off Today’

Ashley Cooke isn’t happy with some of the online comments she received in response to a light-hearted joke she pulled on one of her tour mates earlier this month.

The country star, 28, took to TikTok over the weekend, revealing that she was hurt by some of the negative opinions people have thrown her way over the stunt that she carried out as part of an end-of-tour prank.

In her video, posted on Sunday, Oct. 12, Cooke, who appeared to be in the driver's seat of her car, said she initially contemplated making the clip because she didn’t want to bring any more attention to the naysayers. However, she felt compelled to speak out against them because she was fed up with the negativity that people have been bringing to social media.

“People on the internet are so mean, and I debated even giving it the attention that they don’t deserve, but it’s pissing me off today,” Cooke says in the clip. “I did a prank on my friend for the end of this tour that I was on with him, and a lot of videos were posted of this prank, and maybe I shouldn’t read the comments, but in every video, there is at least one. Some of them have a lot that are just brutal, so mean, and saying so many things that are so hurtful.”

“Maybe I just shouldn't read the comments, but I just can’t believe people would be so mean about a very light-hearted, innocent, fun, friend-to-friend prank,” she continued. “And, I know social media is the wild wild west, and posting videos, even just like this one, you ask for it, but it still just pisses me off, and today I just want to say that. OK, bye.”

Cooke didn’t indicate which artist she pranked, but judging by her schedule, which recently found her serving as an opener on Parker McCollum’s What Kinda Man Tour, and recent clips circulating across the internet, she likely is referring to the video that features her dressing up as the headlining McCollum as a way to receive a few laughs from the crowd.

In the video, which can be viewed below, Cooke mirrors McCollum’s image, wearing blue jeans, a muscle-hugging white t-shirt, and a ball cap. On stage, the pair join their vocals on McCollum’s country smash, “Pretty Heart,” as Cooke plays air guitar to mimic the motion of her tour mate’s real guitar playing.

Comments on the video, as well as other similar clips shared online, prove that Cooke has fallen victim to internet trolls, as one person wrote, “She’s such a pick meee.”

“I don’t like her,” another naysayer captioned, while others pointed out that they thought Cooke was “seeking attention.”

In her more recent video, Cooke called out one user, writing, “I hope you all have a good Sunday, except for you, user4739173918.”

Although she was disrupted by some of the harsh feedback from others, simply for trying to entertain folks with an innocent prank, Cooke did receive some positive commentary from her fans, with several people suggesting that she “post and ghost” from now on.

“We love you, Ashley, and your style,” one person commented, while another fan wrote, “It was so good. Don’t let the haters get to you. It was great!”

A third person chimed in, saying, “Let the haters hate. You are beautiful, and the prank was great and funny.”

It's Common for Country Artists to Prank One Another on Tour

Cooke is no stranger to pranking her tour mates. She previously pulled a few good ones on stars like Jordan Davis and Greylan James. The country music community is also known for keeping tour pranks a tradition, as many artists have been known to prank each other while out on the road, including stars like Ella Langley and Riley Green, Lainey Wilson and Zach Top, and Megan Moroney and Kenny Chesney.
