A select few Aims Community College students will spend nearly two weeks in Ireland next summer as part of the college’s first study abroad program.
The group will head to Dublin on June 4, traveling to several areas of the country before heading back stateside on June 16, according to an Aims Community College news release.
“Less than 2% of study abroad students come from community colleges,” Aims business professor Jennifer Markiewicz said. “Community college students deserve the same transformative experiences as students at four-year universities.”
Markiewicz began pursuing the program during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she noticed students struggling to find connections during a very isolating time.
“Part of the college experience is building your network and forming relationships that will carry you into your career,” Markiewicz said. “It felt like college students weren’t making those connections.”
Students can study abroad as part of four programs: Introduction to Archaeology, Psychology of Death and Dying, Western Civilization and World Mythology. The experience in Ireland will differ for each program, the release states.
“The outcomes for student success are huge,” Markiewicz said. “Employers say cultural awareness and the ability to navigate other countries are conditions of career readiness. Being immersed in that culture gives our students the edge.”
Aims will host an information session for anyone interested at 1-2 p.m. Wednesday in Room 114 of the Student Commons, 5121 W. 20th St. in Greeley. For more information on the study abroad program, go to Aims.Edu/Programs/Study-Abroad.
