The final night of the World Cup stop in Carmel will be underway soon, but one big name has made changes to her lineup for the evening.
Alex Walsh scratched the women’s 50 breast final, choosing to focus all of her energy on the 200 IM instead.
Walsh took 5th in the 50 breast during prelims this morning with a time of 30.05, which knocked almost eight-tenths of a second off of her previous personal breast. Despite being one of the top qualifiers in the event for finals, Walsh has opted out of the race which bumps Andrea Podmanikova, who touched in 30.75 this morning, out of 9th place and into lane eight for tonight.
Walsh’s decision to scratch the 50 breast is likely a strategic move to prioritize the 200 IM, in which she is the top seed heading into finals. Swimmers can race as many events as they want at each stop, but only their three best swims count toward their overall standing.
With $112,000 USD on offer for each gender at each stop ($672,000 for the whole series), limiting events could mean targeting better scores in other events. Prize money is awarded to the top 20 finishers at each stop, with men and women scored separately. In the event of a tie, the swimmer with the higher AQUA Power Points in their best event wins.
Walsh did the 50 breast/200 IM double this morning and narrowly took the top qualifying spot in the 200 IM. She posted a time of 2:07.17, ranking her just .04 ahead of Anastasia Gorbenko, who currently sits in the #2 spot after clocking 2:07.21 during prelims.
With the top six qualifiers all posting times in the 2:07 range this morning, the 200 IM final is shaping up to be a tight battle for gold. Walsh, who boasts a lifetime best time of 2:02.65, will need to be on top of her game if she wants to hold onto that #1 spot in this event.
Earlier in the meet, Walsh placed 4th in the 200 breast (2:18.96), 6th in the 100 breast (1:04.44) and 7th in the 100 IM (58.58).
