Brynn Reines led the University of Northern Colorado volleyball attack for the second time in two matches Saturday, helping the Bears to a 3-1 win over Portland State at Bank of Colorado Arena.
Reines had 14 kills, Alayna Tessena added 13 and Zoe Gibbs recorded 12 as UNC won 25-18, 25-21, 20-25, 25-14.
The Bears improved to 7-11 overall and 4-2 in the Big Sky Conference with their fourth win in their last five matches and fifth victory in six home matches this season.
Reines added six digs to help the Bears defense against the Vikings (6-10, 2-3). An outside hitter from Minnesota, Reines had a season-high 18 kills with eight digs in a four-set home win Thursday over Sacramento State.
Nerea Alvarez Jorge took charge of the UNC offense again Saturday with 42 assists. She also had 13 digs for the second time in two matches to lead the defense. Alvarez Jorge had a season-high 45 assists and 13 digs against Sacramento State.
GA McCarter led UNC with five aces and Isabel Bennett had a team-best four blocks.
The matches against Sacramento State and Portland were the first at home for UNC in two weeks. The Bears return to the road Thursday and Friday at Idaho and Eastern Washington.
UNC is tied with Northern Arizona for third place in the conference standings. Montana and Montana State are tied for second with 3-1 records. UNC beat Montana and lost to Montana State on a road trip last week.
Pre-season favorite Weber State is in first place at 4-1. The Wildcats’ only conference loss was a three-set sweep by Sacramento State in late September, three days after beating UNC in three sets to start conference play.
