That’s it. The season is over. I’m almost foolishly stunned that the Cubs didn’t win, and keep this story going.
There will be a great deal to say about the postseason, the full year, and the ways we’ll think about what this season was. I don’t have that in me tonight.
The Cubs made the playoffs this year. The Cubs won a postseason series this year. And they did a very laudable, impressive thing coming back in this series to force a Game Five, but they didn’t have quite enough to complete the series win tonight. A well-fought series against the team with the best record in baseball. All that glossy stuff. It is all true and applies.
But it’s hard to think about much tonight beyond the fact that the Cubs were so close to turning this into an NLCS run. I don’t particularly want to think about the glossy stuff tonight. I’m thinking about what could have been, and about what the next couple weeks will look like instead. I am so bummed out.
Anyway, as for tonight’s game, it wasn’t an especially compelling one, with enough pitching and defense from the Cubs, but the bats just couldn’t get it going beyond Seiya Suzuki’s early home run. The opportunities were there for the bats. Not a lot of them, but enough of them to make the difference in a two-run game.
The pitching plan was, for the most part, successfully executed, with what was effectively a bullpen game. The Brewers got a trio of solo home runs, which is not good, but that was it. Hardly gonna scream about three runs given up.
Seiya Suzuki produced the only run for the Cubs, so either he’s the Ankin Law “Making It Personal” Player of the Game or it’s a reliever of your choice.
Time to go lay down and stew about things ending earlier than I was hoping.
