Diane Keaton made one of her final public appearances one year before her death.
The actress was spotted shopping in Brentwood, California, in August 2024, flashing her megawatt smile as she strolled down a sidewalk with a friend. Dressed in her signature menswear style, Keaton wore an all-black ensemble that consisted of a turtleneck sweater, a blazer and pants. She accessorized with a black belt, shoes and glasses and a gray bowler hat.
The outing marked one of the last times Keaton was seen in public before her death.

“There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness,” a spokesperson told People on Saturday.
Keaton — who was known for her roles in the Godfather and Father of the Bride franchises as well as The First Wives Club, Annie Hall and more iconic films — retreated from the spotlight in the last year of her life. Six months before her death, she shared her final Instagram post.

“Proof our pets have great taste too! Happy National Pet Day from HG & @diane_keaton,” the caption of the joint post by home goods company Hudson Grace and Keaton read.
The accompanying photos showed Keaton and her dog, Reggie, as the pair posed with treats, a dog figurine and a pet bed from her collaboration with Hudson Grace, which was announced in August 2024.
After Keaton stopped posting on Instagram, fans flocked to the comments section of her last photo to share their well-wishes.
“I miss you here. Hope you are OK,” one person wrote in September, while another replied, “I’m just another woman across the world and wonder how you are since you haven’t posted for months. Sending you hugs from Australia.”
Once news broke of Keaton’s death, fans returned to the post to extend their condolences.
Thirteen years earlier, Keaton spoke candidly about her fear of dying while her children — daughter Dexter, 29, and son Duke, 25, whom she adopted in 1996 and 2001, respectively — were young.
“I’m very aware that my dad died when he was 68, and my mother was in her early 70s when her brain really started to go,” she told AARP in 2012. “When I think about my kids in their 20s and 30s, and me in my 70s and 80s, I worry about that, definitely. I want to be there for them. I want my body and mind to stay strong and to share all these life lessons. But I also know they need to have the freedom and independence to learn on their own.”
At the time, Keaton explained her changing dynamic with her kids as they got older.
“You see them growing and perceiving and changing. There’s a look of awe in her eyes. Being a mother is a joy, but love is work too,” she said. “It takes everything I have sometimes to not snuggle with Dexter. You know, at 16, you don’t want to be snuggly anymore. Sometimes I can pat her hair. Or if I’m lucky, I get a hug.”
Keaton is survived by her children.
