Diane Keaton Once Shared Her Candid Thoughts on Death

13 years before her passing, legendary actress Diane Keaton once shared her unfiltered thoughts about death.

In a resurfaced interview with AARP from 2012, the Something's Gotta Give actress opened up about her fear of dying while her children were still young.

"I'm very aware that my dad died when he was 68, and my mother was in her early 70s when her brain really started to go," she said. "When I think about my kids in their 20s and 30s, and me in my 70s and 80s, I worry about that, definitely. I want to be there for them. I want my body and mind to stay strong, and to share all these life lessons. But I also know they need to have the freedom and independence to learn on their own."

However, she admitted that sometimes it's hard to stand back.

"You see them growing and perceiving and changing. There's a look of awe in her eyes. Being a mother is a joy, but love is work, too," she continued. "It takes everything I have sometimes to not snuggle with [my daughter] Dexter. You know, at 16, you don't want to be snuggly any more. Sometimes I can pat her hair. Or if I'm lucky, I get a hug."

Despite being romantically linked to Woody Allen, Warren Beatty, and Al Pacino throughout her career, Keaton never married or had biological children. Instead, she became a mother in her fifties, welcoming daughter Dexter, 29, and son Duke, 25, through adoption.

"I didn't think that I was ever going to be prepared to be a mother," she told Ladies' Home Journal in 2008. "Motherhood was not an urge I couldn't resist, it was more like a thought I'd been thinking for a very long time. So I plunged in."

According to People, the legendary actress died in California at the age of 79. Additional details are not available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy, per a spokesperson.
