Israel has released Syrian activist Abdul Rahman al-Dalati, who participated in the Freedom Flotilla aboard the ship al-Damir, aimed at breaking the blockade on Gaza, on Friday, October 10.
His sister, journalist Yaman al-Dalati, confirmed to Enab Baladi that he arrived safely in Istanbul, Turkey, after being detained for about three days in Israel’s Negev Prison.
Yaman said her brother is in good health and is currently with Turkish authorities, filling out a report form distributed to Turkish and international activists to document what occurred during their detention by Israeli forces, information that may later be submitted as evidence to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
In May 2024, Turkey announced its accession to South Africa’s genocide lawsuit against Israel before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Born in Homs in 1996, Abdul Rahman holds both Turkish and Syrian citizenship. In addition to his work as a biomedical engineer, he is an activist advocating for Syrian and Palestinian causes.
According to his sister, Abdul Rahman faced severe psychological pressure during his three-day detention in the Negev, where Israeli soldiers subjected the flotilla activists to various forms of intimidation, as reported by multiple organizations during the detention.
The family learned of his release about half an hour before his plane landed in Istanbul, after receiving the passenger list confirming his name.
Yaman explained that his participation in the Freedom Flotilla happened unexpectedly. On the night of the voyage, the Turkish Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH) announced it needed a biomedical engineer for the mission, and Abdul Rahman immediately volunteered. “Overnight, he was on board the ship,” she said.
Arrest and Raid on the Flotilla
Israeli authorities had arrested al-Dalati on Wednesday, October 8, during the Freedom Flotilla voyage intended to break the blockade on Gaza.
The flotilla’s spokesperson, Qasim Aktag, said, “We are surrounded by ships, and the soldiers are approaching to board. Never forget us, keep us in the public eye. Let us maintain our unity and solidarity,” according to Turkey’s Anadolu Agency.
The ship al-Damir reportedly carried enough doctors and medical supplies to operate at least three hospitals in the Gaza Strip.
Severe Violation of International Law
The International Committee for Breaking the Siege on Gaza strongly condemned the Israeli navy’s attack on nine ships organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition and the A Thousand Madelines for Gaza Initiative. The ships carried 145 international activists from more than 25 countries on a humanitarian mission to deliver essential aid to Gaza’s residents.
In a statement issued Wednesday, October 8, the committee described the attack as a “flagrant violation of international law and the principles of freedom of navigation,” and as an “explicit assault” on unarmed civilians and international humanitarians.
According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, the number of casualties in Gaza since October 7, 2023, has reached 67,137 deaths.
A ceasefire agreement in Gaza began implementation on Thursday following the Israeli army’s withdrawal to the yellow line, allowing thousands of displaced people to begin returning to their neighborhoods.
