The Man in Black apparently had a secret for staying healthy — and it involved "seven kinds of brown rice."
This week, the official Johnny Cash Facebook page posted a photo of a handwritten recipe titled “John & June’s CASHBURGERS.” The caption simply read:
“Johnny & June’s ‘Cashburgers’ recipe.”
The note, dated Oct. 7, 1995, details an entirely vegetarian burger recipe filled with brown rice, soybeans, roasted sunflower seeds and hand-chopped vegetables ranging from okra and bell pepper to mushrooms and squash. It ends with instructions to use tapioca flour as a binder, fry the patties in olive or sunflower oil, and season with pepper, garlic, salt and honey or sugar — "all organic."

quickly exploded with comments from fans who couldn’t believe that the outlaw country icon once favored a meat-free meal.
“I read through all these ingredients as I was getting closer and closer to the bottom, thinking, oh yeah, this is going to be grea,t now what kind of meat does he use, and then boom it hits me… no meat,” one fan wrote. “I can't exactly tell you how much respect I have for Johnny Cash, but a certain portion of it just left the building.”
Another fan wrote, "I'm a lifelong fan of Johnny Cash, but finding out that he supported veggie burgers makes me reconsider ?? just goes to show you never truly know your heroes."

Others piled on with humorous disbelief:
“Now add 2 lbs of hamburger and you have a meal. Sorry, Johnny.”“You sure about this? Johnny seems more like a double cheeseburger with all the fixings kind of guy.”“Yuk. He must have really loved her if he pretended to like that.”“I'm not going to beat around the bush, this sounds just horrible!”One particularly harsh commenter even wrote, "F--king ew! How is any of that s--t a burger? Good thing they were good musicians…”
Still, many fans jumped in to defend the late legend and his wife, June Carter Cash, noting that the recipe came straight from their family cookbook.
“I have their cookbook with this recipe in it,” one fan assured others. “I recommend everyone to get the book their son John Carter Cash put together. So much more than just recipes… family history.”

And plenty of others were amused at the over-the-top outrage:
“I'm not vegetarian and not likely to ever be, but the number of people in the comments crashing out over a recipe for a veggie patty is just silly. ?”
“People overreacting over a vegan recipe is half hilarious and half bonkers. People need to get out more.”
“LMAO, imagine being triggered by a veggie patty got damn, you all need a safe space or something?”
“Weirdos losing their damn minds over a veggie burger.”
Some also pointed out that Cash’s health struggles, including diabetes in the 1990s, might explain why he and June were experimenting with plant-based recipes, writing, "I'm sure he was doing what doctors suggested him make changes."
Regardless of where fans stand on Cashburgers, the post served as a rare, personal glimpse into the domestic side of Johnny and June — proof that even the most rugged country legends had a soft spot for home-cooked meals and maybe, just maybe, a veggie burger or two.
