USC Invite

October 11-12, 2025 Los Angeles, CA SCY (25 Yards) Day 1 Results

Day one of the USC Invite continued the trend of fast swimming we were seeing all over the country on Friday from the World Cup to the college meets.

The Indiana Hoosiers had a strong showing on day one, winning most of the men’s events and seeing strong performances from their women’s team, particularly from freshman Liberty Clark.

    Women’s Recap

The meet opened with a win in the 400 medley relay from the Hoosiers. Mya DeWitt led them off in 52.54, which was about a second behind USC’s Minna Abraham, who was 51.32 on the opening leg.

Jonette Lagreid swam 1:00.12 in the breaststroke leg for Indiana to bring them closer to the USC team, and Miranda Grana swam the fly in a blistering 50.93 to pull them even closer. Indiana freshman Liberty Clark swam a massive 46.68 on the freestyle to help Indiana take the win by more than a second.

UCLA’s Sarah Bennetts had the fastest breaststroke split in the field at 59.95, the only swimmer under 1:00 in the event.

Minna Abraham won the 1st individual event, the 500 freestyle, for the USC Trojans. She touched in 4:40.78 to come in more than seven seconds ahead of teammate Claire Tuggle, who finished 2nd in 4:47.90.

Indiana was back to winning with Miranda Grana’s 100 backstroke swim of 50.75. This time was more than a second-and-a-half faster than Mya DeWitt’s 52.34 for 2nd and was about a second off her best of 49.6, but was about a second faster than the 51.62 she swam to open last season.

USC continued to trade off event wins with Indiana in the next event, the 200 IM, which Justina Kozan won in 1:55.44. This is Kozan’s first best time in the event since she set her previous best of 1:56.31 in May of 2019. It is also currently the 2nd fastest time in the country this season behind Aimee Canny’s 1:55.03.

Indiana freshman Liberty Clark won her first event of the meet, the 50 freestyle, in 22.03. This was a new best time by nearly three tenths from the 22.30 she swam at Winter Juniors, and is under last season’s NCAA Invite time in the event.

Clark also led off Indiana’s 200 freestyle relay in 22.04, just a hundredth slower than she went in her individual. Mya DeWitt swam 2nd (22.30), Sze Yeo was 3rd (22.21), and Kristina Paegle was 4th (21.95). They touched in 1:28.50 to beat the USC team by nearly a second.

Kozan won her 2nd event of the meet for USC, the 400 IM, in 4:05.15. This was more than five seconds ahead of 2nd place, and was only two seconds off her best of 4:03.25.

Miranda Grana also won her 2nd event of the meet, the 100 fly, in 51.55, about a second-and-a-half off her best of 50.01

Indiana’s Clark had a massive swim to win the 200 freestyle, swimming 1:42.43, the 2nd fastest time in the country this year. She outtouched USC’s Minna Abraham, the fastest returning 200 freestyler from last season’s NCAA Championships, and she dropped more than three seconds from her previous best of 1:45.76. This is the 2nd fastest October swim in the 200 freestyle with only Anna Moesch’s 1:41.42 from earlier in the day coming in faster.

The final event of day one was the women’s 100 breaststroke, which went to UCLA’s Sarah Bennetts to be the only event not won by Indiana or USC. Bennetts swam 1:00.59 to come in a little more than half-a-second ahead of USC’s Bella Brito.

    Men’s Recap

The Indiana men won all but one event on the first day of the USC Invite.

Their 400 medley relay teams finished 1st and 2nd with their ‘A’ beating the USC ‘A’ by exactly a second. The only split we have for the ‘A’ relay is Raekwon Noel’s 46.26 on backstroke, but the team came together to swim 3:05.97 to beat their ‘B’ team by three hundredths. Miroslav Knedla led that relay off in 45.22.

The NCAA Champion in the mile, Indiana’s Zalan Sarkany won the 500 freestyle in 4:11.39 to set the top time in the country this year, surpassing David Johnston’s 4:14.08 from Texas. This swim was only about two seconds off his best of 4:09.19 from March of 2024.

Miroslav Knedla won the 100 back in 45.58, less than three tenths ahead of Indiana teammate Raekwon Noel, who swam 45.87 to finish 2nd. He was also just over half-a-second off his best of 45.02 from February.

Indiana’s Owen McDonald won the 200 IM in 1:42.91 which is about a second slower than the 1:42.09 he went the same weekend last year.

Mikkel Lee won the 5th straight event for the Indiana men’s team, the 50 freestyle, touching in 19.16 to come in more than half-a-second ahead of teammate Dylan Smiley, who touched in 19.75. Lee’s best time stands at 19.07 from February.

The Hoosiers also took the top two spots in the 200 freestyle relay with Lee (19.37), Vidar Carlbaum (19.60), McDonald (19.35), and Smiley (19.74) touching in 1:18.06 to come in ahead of the ‘B’ relay’s time of 1:19.38.

Sarkany won his 2nd event of the day for Indiana, the 400 IM, in 3:43.45. This was about three seconds off his best of 3:40.50, but was more than four seconds faster than the 3:47.78 he opened last season with.

The men’s 100 fly is the only event Indiana did not win. USC’s Michal Chmielewski won the event by almost four tenths, touching in 45.97 to come in ahead of Hoosier Raekwon Noel. Chmielewski was only about half-a-second off his best of 45.40, and he was nearly three seconds faster than he was this weekend last year where he swam 47.65 in the event.

The last two events swung back in Indiana’s favor with freshman Brandon Fleck winning the 200 freestyle in 1:35.50 to come in ahead of fellow Hoosier Kai Van Westering’s 1:35.65 in a half-second drop from the 1:35.99 that was his previous best time.

Finally, Alexei Avakov won the men’s 100 breaststroke to make the Indiana ‘Breaststroke U’ legacy proud, touching in 52.22 to beat Noah Cakir, who also swims for Indiana, by just over four tenths.
