Swiss Olympic medalist Noe Ponti clinched the victory in 48.53, establishing a new U.S. Open Record in the process.
Runner-up status went to Canada’s Ilya Kharun, with the 20-year-old stopping the clock at 49.02, a new national record.
Kharun opened in 22.71 and closed in 26.31 to shave .01 off the previous Canadian benchmark of 49.03 he set at the 2022 Short Course World Championships in Melbourne, Australia. That former mark rendered Kharun the silver medalist at that competition.
Bronze tonight went to South African Olympic multi-medalist Chad le Clos who touched in 49.57 as the only other sub-50-second performer.
Kharun already owns the Canadian national records in the LCM 50 fly (22.68) and 200 fly (1:52.80). His SCM records include tonight’s 49.02 100 fly, along with the 21.67 50 fly and 1:48.24 200 fly he nabbed at last year’s Short Course World Championships in Budapest.
