Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) slammed President Trump on Friday over his calls for indictments against New York Attorney General Letitia James, former FBI Director James Comey and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.).
“I think it was a mistake, as I already mentioned," Bacon told CNN's Pamela Brown. "Him putting out these demands for indictments — I don’t think it’s right. I think, again, it’s unseemly. Presidents don’t normally do this. And to me, I think he’s foolish."
By "making these demands," Bacon said Comey and James "are going to use his words against him as the first part of their defense during these cases."
After Trump called for Comey and James to be prosecuted, the indictments have become a reality. Comey was indicted on counts of making false statements to Congress and obstruction of a congressional proceeding. He has pleaded not guilty.
James faces counts of bank fraud and false statements to a financial institution. Her initial court appearance is scheduled before a judge in Norfolk, Va., on Oct. 24.
Bacon said the indictments call Attorney General Pam Bondi's impartiality into question.
"If you’re just an outsider looking in and he’s making demands, and then the indictments occur, it undermines the perception of fair justice,” he said. "Now, they still got to get a grand jury to do the indictment, so they could still be guilty. And if they were guilty, they deserve to be held accountable."
Bacon added that Trump's involvement undermines the legal process.
"I wish somebody would just tell them in his office: stop talking about indictments and demanding indictments, because you’re hurting your own cause," he said.
Not running for another term in the House, the Nebraska Republican has openly been a frequent critic of Trump's policies and actions.
Last month, Bacon took to the social media website X to criticize the president after he claimed that the Russia-Ukraine war was "[former President] Biden and [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky's war," without a mention of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who ordered the invasion in 2022.
“Mr. President, Putin is the one who is the invader," Bacon posted. “And, now this war is on your watch and you’ll be judged in the history books in the decades to come by your actions or lack thereof."
