Ukiah Unified celebrates September Students of the Month

Ukiah, CA – Ukiah Unified School District proudly announced the September Students of the Month at a special ceremony held at Ukiah High School on Tuesday, October 7, 2025. Principals recognized 51 students from across the district’s 11 schools, celebrating their academic excellence, leadership, and social-emotional growth with families and community members in attendance.

This year’s event also spotlighted attendance success across the district, recognizing the schools with the highest and most improved attendance rates for September. Frank Zeek Elementary earned the Best Attendance Trophy with a 96.8 percent rate, while Oak Manor Elementary received the Most Improved Attendance Trophy with a 94.6 percent rate – up 2 percent from last year.

“Attendance matters because every day in class strengthens connection, confidence, and learning,” said Superintendent Deb Kubin. “This event is one of my favorite traditions of the year. It reminds us that when students show up – whether it’s in their studies, their friendships, or their community – they’re building the habits that lead to lifelong success. We’re so proud to celebrate these incredible students and the families and staff who support them.”

Each month’s ceremony honors not only the students who exemplify academic commitment and positive character but also the schools demonstrating strong attendance—an essential factor in student achievement and social-emotional growth.

Here are the attendance rates for each Ukiah Unified school in September:

Calpella Elementary: 94.78 percent Frank Zeek Elementary: 96.83 percent Grace Hudson Language Academy: 96.23 percent Nokomis Elementary: 94.16 percent Oak Manor Elementary: 94.55 percent Yokayo Elementary: 96.61 percent Ukiah Independent Study Academy: 89.71 percent Eagle Peak Middle School: 94.38 percent Pomolita Middle School: 95.66 percent Big Picture South Valley High: 91.55 percent Ukiah High School: 94.22 percent

Superintendent Kubin hosted the ceremony, introducing each school’s principal to present their honorees. Teachers nominate students who demonstrate academic dedication, leadership, and social-emotional growth, and principals share remarks from nominating teachers that highlight each student’s unique contributions.

Each student received certificates and gifts from sponsors in recognition of their achievements. A recording of the ceremony is available on the Ukiah Unified YouTube channel.

The Ukiah Unified School District thanks all the parents, family members, and staff members who attended the event and invite the community to celebrate these exceptional students.
