Angelina Jolie Makes Rare Comment on the Surgeries That Changed Her Life

Angelina Jolie is reflecting on one of the most personal and defining decisions of her life.

In a new interview with Hello! Magazine shared on Tuesday, October 7, the Oscar-winning actress opened up about undergoing a double mastectomy in 2013 and later the removal of her ovaries — two preventative surgeries she chose after discovering she carried the BRCA gene, a mutation that significantly raises the risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

“I did choose to have that [surgery] because I lost my mother and my grandmother very young,” Jolie shared to the outlet during the European premiere of her new film, Couture. “I have the BRCA gene, so I chose to have a double mastectomy a decade ago. And then I’ve also had my ovaries removed, because that’s what took my mother.”

Her mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, passed away in 2007 at just 56 after a battle with breast and ovarian cancer. For Jolie, the decision wasn’t easy, but it was one she made out of both grief and empowerment. “Those are my choices,” she said. “I don’t say everybody should do it that way, but it’s important to have the choice. And I don’t regret it.”

Now 50, Jolie channels that same strength into her new film, in which she plays Maxine—a woman navigating the physical and emotional realities of breast cancer while maintaining her sense of identity and desire. “I think there’s much to say about this, and it is uniting for not just women but for anybody who’s gone through something, or someone who feels vulnerable and alone,” she explained.

To honor her late mother, Jolie revealed she wore Bertrand’s necklace and even her ashes during filming—a small but deeply personal tribute woven into a story about resilience, loss, and what it means to keep living fully after pain.

She shared a similar reflection at the Toronto International Film Festival back in September when the film first premiered. She told the  Los Angeles Times that many films treat disease as though it’s the end. “I think for anybody watching, whether you dealt with cancer or anything in your life, you’ve had this moment, where you don’t know if your life is now going to stop, and you feel like it’s going to stop, and you feel like it’s going to be over,” she said. She added, “A lot of people with cancer have said, ‘I feel that’s all people ask me about, right?'”

As of right now, there is no public release date for Couture.
