Happy Friday! We have a really fun slate of college football games ahead of us this weekend, and a few stories to get through from the week, most notably, Bill Belichick might not even make it through the season at UNC. Plus, it’s starting to sound like John Mateer could return for Oklahoma when they take on Texas.
Let’s talk some college football!
Bill Belichick Might Not Make It Through The Year At UNC
On one hand, I’m kind of stunned the Bill Belichick experiment has gone so poorly, so quickly. But on the other hand, given the odd headline-filled offseason and un-Belichick approach to this football season by the legendary head coach, it’s not totally shocking that things have gone so poorly for the Tar Heels this season.
This week, however, the idea of Belichick not making it through the season started to gain some serious traction. First, the season-long documentary on the Tar Heels that Hulu was producing was abruptly cancelled. I understand that the season was going very poorly for UNC, but this disaster of a season would have done great numbers for Hulu. So, pulling the plug there was odd.
Then, multiple outlets reported that Belichick and UNC were already in discussions about planning an exit strategy for the legendary head coach. Inside Carolina reported that potential exit strategy talks took place on Wednesday morning, then Ollie Connolly of The Guardian reported that Belichick would even entertain the idea of triggering his $1 million buyout if he were able to find a soft landing spot in the media or on another staff.
Not only that, but anonymous staff members have leaked info about the toxic nature of the locker room and the program as a whole under the Belichick regime, and a few parents of UNC players have discussed the bad shape of the program as well. A few anonymous parents have claimed that there has been zero communication from Belichick to the parents since he arrived. Not that they were expecting weekly updates, but quite literally zero communication. I understand Bill Belichick came from the NFL, but like, you have to understand in college that communication and building relationships with parents is indeed a thing.
After all this went down, Belichick and the university released potentially the most uninspiring, unconfident statements of all time, expressing their dedication to each other:

— Front Office Sports (@FOS) October 9, 2025The Tar Heels don’t play this weekend. They’re 2-3, but their two wins have come against Richmond and Charlotte, while their losses have come in embarrassing fashion to TCU, UCF, and Clemson. If he made it past the bye week, he probably would last at least a few more games, but this experiment does feel like it’s essentially already over. Hopefully, both sides will realize by the end of the season what a disaster this was and cut their losses and move on. It’s what’s best for the program, the players involved, and Belichick himself.
John Mateer Listed As Probable For Red River Rivalry
Three weeks ago, when John Mateer broke his hand in Oklahoma’s 24-17 win over Auburn, it felt like their season might be in some danger. Mateer was having a Heisman-caliber start to the campaign, and the Sooners were playing their best football of the Brent Venables era. The transfer quarterback was expected to miss around a month and miss 2-3 games after hand surgery.
Fast forward three weeks, and it sounds like Mateer will be ready to go for Oklahoma’s biggest game of the season thus far when they take on Texas after missing just one game against Kent State.
Now, this game has certainly lost a bit of juice thanks to Texas’ tough start and Arch Manning not living up to the hype. However, as this game has shown in the past, this is truly a “throw out the record books” type of rivalry matchup where anything can happen. Plus, for as tough as Texas’ offense has looked at times, its defense has been one of the best in the country. With the Sooners now having their quarterback likely back, they’ve shifted to be a slight favorite over the Longhorns.
Can Texas put it all together at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday, or will Oklahoma use John Mateer’s return to vault them to a big win? This one should be a heck of a game.

Tough break for Arizona State. Their starting quarterback, Sam Leavitt, is very unlikely to play at Utah this weekend. Head coach Kenny Dillingham said it would be a ‘mini miracle’ if he were able to go. The Sun Devils are currently 4-1 and in the thick of the Big 12 race. A loss at Utah would certainly be a blow to their chances of making it to the conference title game.JUST IN: on 98.7 FM Kenny Dillingham said that QB Sam Leavitt been battling with an injury dating back to Baylor game and his injury didn't get better. He doesn't expect him to play "will be a mini miracle" but final determination will be this morning.
— DevilsDigest.com (@DevilsDigest) October 10, 2025 Stanford just received its largest football donation ever this week. Alum and former football player Bradford M. Freeman donated a whopping $50 million directly to the football program. Call it the Andrew Luck effect in Palo Alto! I know the program is facing some hard times right now, but donations like this show that the money will be there under Luck’s leadership. While it might not be the best job in the country, I do think living in Palo Alto and coaching Stanford would be an attractive destination for some coaches. Not sure they’ll ever reach the heights they hit under Jim Harbaugh and David Shaw, but I do think Andrew Luck will help Stanford get back to relevance.Stanford alum and former football player Bradford M. — Yahoo Sports (@YahooSports) October 8, 2025 Notre Dame will yet again be without receiver Jaden Greathouse this weekend due to a hamstring injury. Greathouse missed last week’s win over Boise State, too. After a breakout campaign in 2024, this season has been a very odd, unproductive one for Greathouse. He has just four catches for 73 yards. Granted, the Irish receiver room is quite deep with Jordan Faison, Malachi Fields, and Will Pauling, but still, there were high expectations for Greathouse this season. For what it’s worth, he’s still under the limit of games played that would allow him to take a redshirt and transfer at the end of the year if he wanted to. Not saying he will, but until he plays another game, it can’t be ruled out.Notre Dame wide receiver Jaden Greathouse is still dealing with his right hamstring injury. — Tyler Horka (@tbhorka) October 9, 2025 Nearly six weeks ago, Florida State freshman linebacker Ethan Pritchard was shot in the back of the head while giving his aunt a ride home. Earlier this week, he was released from the hospital and transferred to a rehab facility in Jacksonville. Upon his release, Pritchard was greeted by the entire FSU football team. Hopefully, Pritchard’s long road of rehabilitation keeps progressing, and he feels the support of his team the whole way.Mike Norvell and FSU’s entire team greet Ethan Pritchard and family as he leaves TMH to Brooks Rehabilitation in Jacksonville ❤️ pic.twitter.com/4LMZiPuaSW
