RIP: Loyola Chicago Fan-Favorite Sister Jean Passes Away

Loyola University of Chicago officially announced the passing of Sister Jean on Thursday night. She was 106 years old.

Serving the University since 1991, Sister Jean emerged as a sports icon in Chicago and beyond during the 2018 NCAA Tournament. A devoted fan of Loyola Ramblers basketball, she served as the team’s chaplain that season and became a fan-favorite on the sideline. The Ramblers would go on to make one of the most famous Cinderella runs that March Madness has ever seen.

Entering the tournament as a No. 11 seed after clinching the Missouri Valley Conference. They would first narrowly escape the Miami Hurricanes 64-62 before squeaking past Tennessee 63-62. Another one-point victory would follow against Nevada before they ran away with things against Kansas State to clinch a Final Four berth. Their magical run would come to an end against the Michigan Wolverines, who would go on to lose to Villanova in the Championship game.

Nevertheless, Sister Jean has remained a memorable figure in the college basketball world and the Chicago community since.

“In many roles at Loyola over the course of more than 60 years, Sister Jean was an invaluable source of wisdom and grace for generations of students, faculty, and staff,” Loyola President Mark C. Reed said. “While we feel grief and a sense of loss, there is great joy in her legacy. Her presence was a profound blessing for our entire community and her spirit abides in thousands of lives. In her honor, we can aspire to share with others the love and compassion Sister Jean shared with us.”

    RIP, Sister Jean.
