Outlander: Blood of My Blood Finale Recap: Shocking Deaths and Major Cliffhangers

The first season of Outlander: Bloodof My Blood set the stage for a dramatic finale. The Earl of Mar (Craige Els) used his annual tynchal as cover to secretly rally support for Rob Roy (Jamie Sives) and his Jacobite cause. While politics heated up, personal drama boiled over. Simon Fraser (Tony Curran) beat and disowned Brian (Jamie Roy), who also narrowly survived an attempt on his life. Meanwhile, in the MacKenzie camp, Dougal (Sam Retford) confessed that Brian was the reason Ellen’s (Harriet Slater) virtue was questioned, prompting Colum (Seamus McLean Ross) to order her to end their romance.

Here's everything to know about the Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 1 finale, and how it sets up Season 2.

Episode 10, “Something Borrowed,” wastes no time raising the stakes. In 1920, we glimpse little Claire at her second birthday party with her parents and Henry's brother, lovingly nicknamed Uncle Lamb (George Kemp). Back in the 18th century, wedding bells ring at Castle Leoch, though the bride beneath the veil isn’t who viewers might expect.

A day earlier, Brian and Murtagh (Rory Alexander) survive a mercenary attack arranged by Colum, confirming that Ellen’s rejection was meant to protect Brian. After learning of the betrayal right before she's to marry Malcolm Grant (Jhon Lumsden), Ellen won’t keep to an agreement her brother has already severed. “Colum broke his promise, and that frees me of mine,” she declares, before hiding away in the castle with Brian with help from Jocasta (Sadhbh Malin) and Mrs. Fitz (Sally Messham).

Meanwhile, Julia (Hermione Corfield) and Henry (Jeremy Irvine) finally seize their chance to escape, heading for Craigh na Dun. Mr. Bug (Terence Rae), tipped off by Seema (Lauren McQueen), is close on their trail, but the couple reach the stones and lay their hands upon them, though whether they cross through is left unresolved.

At Castle Leoch, the truth of the wedding comes out: the bride is Maura Grant (Bobby Rainsbury), quickly married to Dougal to preserve the MacKenzie–Grant alliance. Humiliated and furious, Malcolm discovers Ellen and Brian in the midst of their escape. The confrontation ends with Brian killing Malcolm in self-defense.

The season closes with both couples’ futures in doubt. Julia and Henry’s fate hinges on the stones, while Ellen and Brian, finally free together, look out at fiery crosses burning across the horizon. It's a call to arms for the coming Jacobite uprising, and one Brian cannot ignore.

Who is Uncle Lamb in Outlander?

In the Outlander books, Quintin Lambert Beauchamp, referred to as "Q" or "Uncle Lamb," is the person who raises Claire after her parents died in a car accident when she was 5 years old. Viewers saw the accident in question in Episode 1 and know that Henry and Julia survive and disappear in time. The character is seen briefly in Season 1 of Outlander during a flashback in the premiere, but it makes sense for the character to be more relevant to the plot of Blood of My Blood since Claire is a child.

The season finale is bookmarked by two key moments with Uncle Lamb, perhaps hinting at the character's future importance. The opening scene of Episode 10 starts with Claire's second birthday party, and the last scene of the finale shows Henry and Julia waving goodbye to their now 5-year-old daughter at the train station as they go for a vacation to Scotland under the watchful eye of her uncle.

Probably because she was busy with a failed betrothal! Outlander fans have heard the name Maura Grant before. In Season 1 Episode 10, entitled "By the Pricking of My Thumbs," Dougal (Graham McTavish) learns his wife, Maura, has died, though it happens offscreen. In Episode 4 of Blood of My Blood, Ellen is arguing with Colum because she doesn't want to marry Malcolm. To convince her, he tells Ellen the story of Graham Finley. Finley's the man who was supposed to marry Maura Grant, but found her unattractive and called it off, then he suddenly disappeared. It was a warning to Ellen that she better go through with her wedding or she could face the same fate. Now that Maura is married to Dougal, we're sure to see a lot more of her. And with their nuptials already part of Outlander canon, it gave showrunners a clever way to introduce a new character late in the season and a plot device to have Ellen get out of her marriage to Malcolm.

The impact of the Jacobite uprising on the Outlander franchise

There were four Jacobite revolts in the 1700s, occurring in 1708, 1715, 1719, and 1745. Outlander fans have already seen the Battle of Culloden play out onscreen, which was part of the Jacobite Rebellion that started in 1745. Outlander: Blood of My Blood begins in 1714, but the start of the uprising at the end of the Season 1 finale is a clear indicator that we're now in 1715, and that it will have a significant impact on future storylines. Some of the major players from the 1715 revolt are characters we've already met, including the Earl of Mar and Rob Roy. The Battle of Sheriffmuir (1715) was the most significant battle from that time period, so viewers should expect to see it and the character of James Stuart, the man Jacobites view as the rightful king, onscreen sometime in the future.

Will there be a Season 2 of Outlander: Blood of My Blood?

Yes! A second season was announced before Season 2 even aired. While it'll probably be a while before a second season of Blood is My Blood airs, you won't have to wait long for the final season of Outlander. It's set to premiere in early 2026.
