Pack your bags, because The Amazing Race is back! Every week, Parade'sMike Bloom will bring you interviews with the team of Big Brother alumni and their loved ones most recently eliminated from the race.Almost six months after walking down the aisle, Megan and Matt Turner walked onto The Amazing Race. As the Big Brother 24 alum mentioned in the most recent episode of Season 38, while he had been on the outside looking in to start his time in the house, a key win in Week 3 propelled his success all the way to making the finale. Unfortunately, the couple was only able to replicate half of that story on the race proper.

The Season 38 premiere seemed to hit many teams of former houseguests hard, throwing them immediately into a gauntlet of grueling tasks and difficult navigation. Both had the couple falling behind early on, growing so delirious they were questioning what a port was and whether a duck was a clue. Regardless, they were able to scrape by to avoid being the first eliminated. However, the couple was so far behind that they were the only ones on a train into Prague, surely spelling the end of their race. Once again, however, they prevailed, as a canceled train proved to be their saving grace. They caught up with three other teams and edged out yet another duo to survive.
So far, The Amazing Race 38 has been remarkably consistent. Some teams have been trading places in the front of the pack, while others have retained literally the same placement every leg. Similarly, Matt and Megan started their trip to Kutná Hora in a familiar position, playing catch-up. And the first Roadblock proved to be their best performance yet, as they were neck-and-neck with Kat Dunn and Alex Romo. Unfortunately, the Turners were given one too many turns in their directions, sending them to a completely different place. By the time they had found their bearings, it was too late, as Phil Keoghan made the rare stop in the field (lliterally) to eliminate them. Now, out of the race, Megan and Matt talk about why they struggled with the race so early on, persevering through constantly being in the back of the pack, and what they learned most about their new spouse racing through Europe together.Related: Everything to Know About The Amazing Race 38
How are the two of you doing right now? Matt, you have completely different hair now than you did then. How does it feel looking back on an experience that was only a handful of months, and one hairstyle, ago?Matt Turner: It's hilarious you say that. Genuinely watching last night's episode and the two prior to that, it doesn't even look like I'm looking at myself. Because I'm used to this [Points at his short hair.]. I'm sure that the audience who was watching this is [confused] because I don't look anything like I did at that time.Megan Turner: I feel like I'm looking at two versions of you.Matt: I guess this is the Matt they were speaking of, and that was Turner. [Laughs.] I have no idea. But I've been on a fitness journey, which has been good since then. And no, I think the personality is the same, just a different look.Well let's talk about what got that long hair back on our screens. Matt, what was you reaction when you got the offer to do The Amazing Race? And were you always going to pick Megan as your partner?Matt: So I got a call right before we got married, and we got married last October, almost exactly a year ago. It probably was a year ago that I got contacted. And so when that happened, they were like, "Hey, who do you think as your partner?" And I instantly thought of Megan. I don't know who else I could stand, really.Megan: I could hear the conversation. I was sleeping on the couch. And I was like, "Oh god."Matt: So I was like, "Let me ask her." Because Megan's been asked to do shows before and just not interested.I didn't know that! Was that before or after Megan Belmonte became a household name in BB24?Matt: It was after. But Megan, every time I'm like, "Hey, you interested?" she's like, "No, not even close." And so that's what I thought the answer would be. This time I was like, "Megan, want to do The Amazing Race?"Megan: And I was like, "How can I say no to that?!" So obviously, I said yes.Matt: And I think it was perfect that, in casting, we had gotten married, because that was obviously right before. We were the newest newlyweds who could have been in casting. So it was good. I was excited to even get the call.Whenever teams get the call that they're going on the race, they do different forms of preparation. What was yours?Matt: Well, we watched The Amazing Race for the first time. I'm just going to be honest, I had never seen it.Megan: I've seen some seasons. It wasn't a religious watcher, by no means. But I love the show, and I love the concept, and we were kind of just excited to get into it. But it didn't mean we put in the training to get into it. We kind of just were like, "Let's wing it!" like every other aspect of our life. Like when we did van life, we decided two days before that we're going to do van life. That's kind of how we roll.Matt: We're also the busiest people. I know it might not look like it, but we are working around the clock. And so we don't necessarily have a lot of time to go out and train. Megan: I was just also starting a brand new job, so I was really focused on that. So I was just being like, "We'll see what happens when we get there." And our whole preparation leading up to it was just like, "That looks easy. Let's try it!"Matt: And Megan's probably heard this tale 1000 times. When I ran the race, I was 200 pounds. I'm not a 200 pound guy, I was huge for me. And so I was at the least in shape I've ever been, as opposed to now. I think if I got anything from the show, it was the reality check that I should get in shape, and that's been the fitness journey I'm currently on. So I've lost 36 pounds, I think, now. But I think that was the best thing I got from the race was the training after it ended.Well, let's go from the new job to the proverbial pink slip you got in this episode. Matt, we saw you catch up to Alex at the first Roadblock. So what happened between then and getting eliminated in the field? Was it as simple as just getting incredibly lost?Matt: I want to put an asterisk next to that real quick, because I finished before Alex. I did that competition in like 10 minutes. I was really good at that. Megan: It was more like 20.Matt: We'll even it out at 15. But my strategy was that it would be exploding and popping, but I felt like everyone else would just let it fall. I was twisting it before 90% of the explosion came out. So I would let it explode to get all over me, but I was still fine with that. And so in the episode, you'll see I'm looking for the beer master, and I couldn't find him. So Alex gets there before I do. And I'm wandering around for five minutes trying to figure out where to take these bottles. I couldn't figure it out because he was behind a wall.Megan: After we left there, it was purely just directions. It was just navigating. It was just so tough. Phil mentioned to us, "Yeah, we just knew you guys were just strolling around Prague in the Czech Republic, just having a nice little sightseeing day." And we're like, "That's exactly what we did!"Matt: To be fair, the directions we got, we went right to where we were supposed to go. It was just the wrong place.Wait, so you got the right directions to the wrong place?Matt: Yeah, it was an IKEA an hour and a half in the wrong direction. We were in the IKEA parking lot, being like, "This can't be right. This isn't a farm." [Laughs.]I wait to rewind to the beginning of the race. Because it seems like everybody got hit with the reality of the competition in that first leg. And we saw that a lot with you, between getting frustrated with directions to the clear physical toll it took. Talk me through your headspace throughout that day.Matt: To go back in my job, I do woodworking, but it has nothing to do with being good with my new details. It's really just throwing things at the wall and hoping something sticks. That's what my job is. So to the contrary of The Amazing Race, being really good at paying attention to small details, that's not what I am good at. It's brute forcing my way through something. And that's not an option in this show.Megan: And I kind of let him take all of those little detours, just because I was so overwhelmed and I was like, "I'm struggling. I'm stressed out. This is for you, not me."Matt: And it makes sense. Your first time on TV is stressful, especially when it's like, "Okay, cameras are on. I have to perform."Megan: Personally, I don't like showing my life like that. So I was just like, "I need a moment. This is all you. I know you're color blind, but good luck."Matt: Yeah, and I'm fine with cameras filming. That doesn't affect it. That would be a good excuse for us to say the camera makes me nervous. Cameras don't make me nervous at all. I love the cameras on me. I just struggled with a few things.I know that teams try to spend the downtime in earlier legs trying to parse through what they did and how they could improve themselves. Did you try to do the same?Megan: I was definitely trying to improve on my direction note taking, because I think that was kind of what was getting us. Because I was like, had my directions, I had my map, and I had no compass, so I didn't know which way we were going. So I kind of was just trying my best to write down direction by direction, and trying to interpret it in a way that would be easy for me to tell Matt while he's driving.Matt: And, by the last day, we had actually a really good navigation strategy where, when we were asking people for directions, she would write down her notes, I would write down my notes. And I would be in the car driving with notes, and then we compare and be like, okay, "So I think we're going here. Is that what your notes say? Alright, let's go there." And so we were doing really well in the last day.Megan: I think we just ran out of time. Matt: Yeah, just ran out of time. If we got the right directions, we would have been fine.Last episode, we got a segment about your relationship. Matt, you spoke about usually figuring things out your own way rather than follow directions. And Megan, you're more than happy to have him take the lead. How do you feel that translated to The Amazing Race, which is all about following directions and taking charge?Matt: What a question. Only a good question like that would come from Mike Bloom. I mean, I think that our relationship dynamic in a perfect world would have been really good to the race. But, like Big Brother, it's really hard to plan, except for maybe the wall comp, because you know what's coming. There's no planning specifically for some of these. And I know some people trained better than others.Megan: I think the most we did was in our hotel room, like before we left, was juggle. You missed your calling. I saw next week's preview!Teams definitely have a different mentality when they're racing in the back of the pack versus when they're not. What was it like for you to be put in that mentality essentially your entire race?Megan: I don't think we really cared so much about being last place. So, you know how you see people on The Amazing Race and they're like, "Oh, my life's over!" We're kind of just like, "RIP." [Laughs.]Matt: mean, listen, we have survived a seven-year relationship without a million dollars, so it's okay if we don't win a million dollars. We're good, it's gonna be fine. And I think when I watched the show, because we did, preparing for the race, watch a lot of seasons. And it was just like, "These people, they're gonna kill each other trying to win this million dollars, and then after they're gonna not be together. So what was the point?" And I think the one strong suit we had was we are great, I think, with communication. Even if the communications get scrambled along the way to get somewhere, think we're just always working together. And we never fought on the race. There was never a time where we were angry at each other. We never swore at each other. It was just us.If you had stayed, were there particular teams you were trying to work with?Megan: We were definitely trying to work out something with Joseph and Adam, because Joseph was his best man at our wedding as well. So we're super close with him and his brother. So that was one thing the show didn't really capture well, but we were super close with them. We wanted to work with them.Matt: And even right before we left, we were really close, talking a lot with Jag and with Taylor. So it's like there are so many people that we would have loved to be with. And I had mentioned in the last interview, there was a time where we were going from Port of Volendam to the cheese markets or whatever. And we were driving, lost as hell, and we see, like, nine teams in one circle moving as a mass. And it's like, "Wow, that must be really nice for nine different teams right now to know exactly where they're going!" Because all that you need is the person in front to be aware of what's happening.Megan: All your nine heads together. We had just two noggins, and half of those was barely a brain.Matt: We had one because my half was barely working! [Laughs.] So, no, it would have been nice to be with other people. But as I remember back on it, when I'm older, it'll just be a nice time I spent with my wife in Europe. On that note, what did you learn the most about the other person racing around Europe together?Megan: What I learned about Matt is you literally just kept going and going. Like during that flower comp, when he was there for five hours, he was obviously stressed, but he was not taking it out on anyone. He was just like, "Alright, let's see if these are the right ones. No? Alright, I'll go back." So just seeing him stay calm underneath that pressure was something that I just learned. I was like, "Oh my God, this man is just the most calm under pressure." And I learned a lot from that, because I am not so much.Matt: And I think something I learned about Megan was under an intense amount of pressure. I think I've always known this, but there's never been a time where Megan's under that much pressure. What the hell would be happening in our real life to make that much pressure? She needs an extremely supportive person lifting her up. And I think I knew that before. But doubling down on that.Megan: Yeah, I needed your support. [Laughs.] Matt: There are definitely times where I needed to take a step back and be like, "Alright, Megan needs some support. Let me double down on that." As opposed to me trying to get somewhere as fast as I can. Megan needing support is going to be a little more important. Is there anything else you want to say about what we didn't see during your time on the race?Megan: When I walked away and I tripped and fell at the last very second, I actually cracked a rib there. And I was bedridden for like a month. Yeah, that's a fun little detail.
