TEMPE — The Arizona Cardinals’ biggest offensive addition this offseason may get his chance to shine this week against one of his former teams.
With quarterback Kyler Murray missing a second straight day of practice with a foot issue on Thursday, there’s a real chance backup Jacoby Brissett gets a start with the Cardinals in Week 6.
Now, there’s still a chance Murray returns to action — Friday’s practice report will say a lot — but it certainly feels like things are trending toward break-glass-in-case-of-emergency time for the team and quarterback.
You won’t find many Cardinals players and coaches running frantic in the locker room, though. Unlike seasons past, Brissett brings plenty of NFL experience to the backup role.
“I have full trust in Jacoby (Brissett). … I’m excited to see if he gets the opportunity.”

“I have full trust in Jacoby,” Marvin Harrison Jr. said Wednesday. “Me and Jacoby get some passes in after practice when Kyler is the starter and I think just developing that kind of relationship after practice — he doesn’t get many throws at practice and he kind of wants to get his arm loose out there, so I’ve been throwing with him a little bit.
“I think the biggest thing is he’s been such a good leader and mentor for me since he’s got here. I’m excited to see if he gets the opportunity.”
Entering what could be his 54th NFL start and 90th game played across six different stops, the veteran signal caller has filled in many times in his 10-year career.
That includes a 2022 stop in Cleveland, where Brissett completed 64% of his throws for 2,608 yards and 12 touchdowns to six interceptions in 16 games (11 starts). He finished with a 4-7 record.
Brissett’s quarterbacks coach at the time? Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing.
And if there’s one thing to highlight about his time in Cleveland, it’s how Brissett consistently found No. 1 option Amari Cooper, who posted one of his best seasons as a pro behind 1,160 yards and a career-high nine touchdowns. Seven of those scores and 792 yards came with Brissett running the show.
Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon has also seen Brissett up close during their time together with the Colts in 2019. The quarterback set career marks in passing yards (2,942), touchdowns (18) and wins (seven) that year.
His most recent starting experience came in 2024 as a member of the New England Patriots, where he made five starts across eight games played. He completed 58% of his throws for 826 yards and two touchdowns to one interception. He added 15 carries for 62 yards on the way to a 1-4 mark.
“He’s a good football player, he’s a great teammate, really good leader. If he’s gotta play, he’s gotta play.”

“He’s a true pro. I know that term gets thrown around, but when you’re in his seat — the quarterback position is the hardest position in sports — and know that you’re one play away from your role changing, you really do got to be on the details like you’re the starter,” Gannon said Wednesday.
“He has a smile on his face. He loves the practice. He loves to prepare. He loves to play. We’ve seen that out on the grass since he’s been here and I was with him the one year in Indy, but he’s a good football player and he’s a great teammate, really good leader. If he’s got to play. He’s got to play.”
Whoever is starting this week is going to have their hands full against an opportunistic Colts defense that is fifth in the NFL in both total takeaways (eight) and turnover differential (+5).
Indianapolis has also been stingy when it comes to the scoreboard, posting the fourth fewest points allowed in the NFL (17.8). That includes last week’s 40-6 beatdown of the Las Vegas Raiders.
If Arizona’s offense isn’t on its game from the jump — which has been an issue this season — this one could get away real fast.
The Colts aren’t just relying on their defense to win games, either, with Indianapolis sitting second in the league in points per game (32.6) and fourth in total yards per game (381.2).
Having that kind of offensive firepower led by Daniel Jones and Jonathan Taylor only forces the issue that much more for opposing offenses to push it down the field.
As far as the teams the Cardinals have faced so far, none look as complete as the Colts do six weeks in.
