More than three decades after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, Michael J. Fox is still leading with optimism. TheBack to the Future star, now 65, opened up about his day-to-day reality living with the progressive neurological disorder — and how he’s continuing to adapt.
“I wake up and get the message of what the day is gonna be like, and I try to adjust to it,” Fox told People on Wednesday, October 8.
“I keep getting new challenges physically, and I get through it. I roll around in a wheelchair a lot, and it took some getting used to. Fox added, “You take the good, and you seize it.”
Parkinson’s disease is a disorder that primarily affects movement. Symptoms include tremors, muscle stiffness, slowed movement, balance issues and cognitive changes. While there is currently no cure, treatments and therapies can help manage symptoms.
Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at just 29-years-old, but kept it private until 1998. In 2000, he founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, which has since become one of the leading organizations funding studies to better understand the disease.

Although Fox retired from acting in 2020 due to his diagnosis, he recently returned to the screen. He will appear in the upcoming season of Apple TV+’s comedy series Shrinking, playing a character who also has Parkinson’s.
“It was the first time ever I get to show up on-set, and I didn’t have to worry about am I too tired or coughing or anything,” he told the magazine. “I just do it.”
Aside from acting, Fox is set to release a new memoir, Future Boy, on October 14. The book dives into his experiences juggling Family Ties and Back to the Future during the 1980s.
“I see other people’s work, and it makes me think that I might be able to find something that’s for me as an actor and as a writer,” he said. “And as a parent, husband and friend, I have a lot left to do.”
In a 2023 interview with Town & Country, Fox reflected on his thoughts about mortality. Despite his diagnosis, he doesn’t live in fear.
“One day I’ll run out of gas. One day I’ll just say, ‘It’s not going to happen. I’m not going out today.’ If that comes, I’ll allow myself that. I’m 62 years old,” he explained. “Certainly, if I were to pass away tomorrow, it would be premature, but it wouldn’t be unheard of. And so, no, I don’t fear that.”
