Consumer Alert: Insurers are changing or dropping Medicare Advantage Plans

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Medicare open enrollment begins next week, and recipients in the area are receiving letters indicating they no longer have Medicare Advantage. Insurance companies are dropping or changing their plans, News10NBC reported.

Dr. Rhonda Randall, UnitedHealthcare’s chief medical officer, said, “This is the time that you want to spend doing your research and getting educated about the plans that are offered in your area.”

On UnitedHealthcare’s website, the 2025 plans show several Medicare Advantage offers. However, there are no Medicare Advantage plans for 2026, as United is no longer offering them in the area. Only those with dual coverage or Medicaid alone will have a United option. Unitedhealthcare Med Supp and standalone Part D plans for prescriptions are also available.

When asked why United is dropping Advantage plans in 109 counties, Randall said, “I’m not the best person to give information around those business decisions.”

Later in the day, a UnitedHealthcare spokesperson sent News10 NBC a statement that reads, “UnitedHealthcare is making strategic adjustments to our Medicare Advantage offerings for 2026 to ensure long-term affordability and stability of our plans. We are here to support members through any necessary transition and remain committed to helping everyone understand their options.”

UnitedHealthcare’s earnings call on September 30th revealed that government payment cuts for certain conditions could reduce their insurance profits by $4 billion.

MVP still offers Medicare Advantage plans in the area, but costs will increase significantly in 2025. Current premiums are $39 or $93.40, but in 2026, they will rise to $160 or $229 monthly. The free plan will no longer include dental or eye care.

Andy Spadoni, MVP’s senior director of market strategy, responded to viewer concerns about rising costs, saying, “I would point to the landscape, the rising cost of care and rising prescription drug prices.”

Nonprofit insurers like MVP and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield also cite decisions by Washington that have led to lower reimbursement rates. Last week, News10 NBC brought you a story how changes that Excellus BlueCross BlueShield is making in its Medicare Advantage plans is affecting are seniors.
