Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboanarrowly escaped an assassination attempt Monday night after gunfire hit hisconvoy in Cañar province, according to the Interior Ministry.
In a statement, the ministry saidfive suspects were arrested after the attack, which occurred as Noboa’smotorcade passed through a protest zone. The president was unharmed, though hisvehicle was struck by bullets, according to Environment Minister Inés Manzano,who called the incident “a direct attempt on the president’s life.”
The assault came amid nationwideprotests over the government’s plan to phase out diesel subsidies, now enteringtheir third week. Demonstrations led by the Confederation of IndigenousNationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) have blocked highways and paralyzed transportin several provinces.
