Did Ed Gein Kill Girlfriend Adeline Watkins? All About Their Real-Life Relationship

To say Ed Gein, the man who inspired Norman Bates, had complicated feelings about women would be the understatement of the century, but he won the heart of at least one lady during his life ... maybe.

The murderer and graverobber, who Charlie Hunnam inhabits in Ryan Murphy's series Monster: The Ed Gein Story, allegedly dated Adeline Watkins in real life.

Adeline (played by The Idol alum Suzanna Son) is based on Watkins. Watkins only ever spoke of Gein kindly — despite him being the same man who brutally murdered and dismembered local hardware store owner Bernice Worden and bar owner Mary Hogan, in Plainfield, Wis., in the 1950s.

Still, it shouldn't be too surprising that Gein, who inspiredPsycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and elements of The Silence of the Lambs, also had an unconventional and at times baffling relationship with Watkins. Here's everything to know about the woman who claimed to be Ed Gein's girlfriend of two decades.

Adeline Watkins reportedly claimed to be Gein's girlfriend for 20 years, but later walked that way back. (For his part, Gein never spoke about Watkins publicly.)

In any case, Watkins — just days after Gein's arrest for murdering, hanging, slicing open and disemboweling Worden in November 1957 — told the Minneapolis Tribune (via the Wisconsin State Journal) that Gein was "good and kind and sweet."

Watkins claimed that she and Gein were in a romantic relationship for 20 years, and that their last date had been Feb. 5, 1955. Watkins' mother corroborated her story, saying that Gein was "a sweet polite man" who always brought Watkins back to her home before her 10 p.m. curfew.

"Eddie was so nice about doing things I wanted to do that sometimes I felt I was taking advantage of him," Watkins said of the man who made furniture from human skin.

According to Watkins, her romance with Gein was pretty pure (she even said he'd rather have a drugstore milkshake than a beer at the bar), and that they split on their final date because she wouldn't agree to marry him.

Nope! That's how we were about to (sort of) learn about her to begin with — she spoke out after his arrest for murdering Hogan and Worden.

Did Adeline Watkins know what Ed Gein was doing?

Based on what she's told the press, it seems like Watkins genuinely had no idea about Gein's graverobbing, murders or bizarre taxidermy. In fact, she didn't even blame him at all for their breakup.

She explained that the split wasn't because she thought there was anything wrong with Gein, who was later discovered to have cut off Hogan's face to wear as a mask and made a belt made out of nipples from corpses he exhumed.

"It was something wrong with me," she admitted to the Minneapolis Tribune. "I guess I was afraid I wouldn't be able to live up to what he expected of me. I loved him and I still do."

However, she did reveal one tidbit that likely is a colossal red flag in hindsight: "I guess we discussed every murder we ever heard about. Eddie told [me] how the murderer did wrong, what mistakes he had made," she said. "I thought it was interesting."

After becoming a reluctant celebrity for claiming to have dated Gein for 20 years, Watkins retracted what she reportedly said in her first interview with the Minneapolis Tribune. Speaking to the Stevens Point Journal (via PEOPLE) about two weeks later, she said the initial reports about her connection to the killer were "exaggerated … blown up out of proportion to its importance and containing untrue statements."

She added that she never called him "sweet," just "quiet and polite," and that they only went on dates intermittently for seven months. During that period, Watkins said that occasionally they'd go to the movies together and that he'd drop by the apartment she shared with her mother.

Watkins is, in fact, a real person who inspired the character Adeline in the show. However, based on Watkins' own accounts, their relationship was quite different than one shown in the series.
