ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A recent reanalysis shows a powerful tornado, which struck in June near Enderlin, North Dakota, has officially been upgraded to an EF-5 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. This is the highest possible rating and an exceptionally rare event in the United States.
Located approximately 60 miles southwest of Fargo, the tornado now joins the list of twisters that have reached this catastrophic level. New data indicates peak wind speeds in excess of 210 miles per hour, which is a category causing “incredible” damage.
The Enhanced Fujita Scale, which ranges from EF-0 to EF-5, estimates tornado intensity based on the damage inflicted on structures and vegetation. As the rating increases, so too does the expected severity of destruction. While EF-0 tornadoes, with winds starting around 65–85 mph, account for about half of all tornadoes in the U.S., EF-5 events represent less than one percent, making them extraordinarily rare.
The twister touched down in a sparsely populated area, with limited infrastructure to document significant damage. However, one notable exception provided the evidence, a freight train traveling through the area was derailed by the tornado’s force. The train, carrying grain, included cars weighing roughly 35 tons each or 70,000 pounds. The sheer energy required to toss massive steel cars from the tracks underscores the tornado’s immense power.
This event marks the first EF-5 tornado in the United States in over 12 years. The last confirmed EF-5 was the 2013 Moore, Oklahoma, which devastated parts of the Oklahoma City metro area.
The Enderlin tornado serves as a reminder of nature’s extremes – even in remote locations.
