Deion Sanders is set to undergo a major procedure on Tuesday.
The Colorado head coach revealed to the media that his medical team discovered blood clots in his leg that will require immediate surgery.
Last Saturday, he was spotted limping with one shoe off during the game against TCU that left everyone wondering what was going on.
After the game he told everyone what he thought was happening.
“Cat’s out of the bag, all right. I think I’ve got more blood clots,” Sanders said after the TCU loss. “It don’t make sense. I’m hurting like crazy. … I’m not getting blood to my leg. That’s why my leg is throbbing.”
The 58-year-old confirmed on Tuesday that his team is moving quickly to take care of the serious issue.
“I’m having a procedure today,” Sanders revealed on Tuesday. “Prayerfully, I’ll be right back tomorrow because I don’t miss practice; I don’t plan on doing such.
“It is what it is; we found what we found. We knew what it was. I have a wonderful team of doctors at UC Health and a wonderful team of trainers here…
“It has nothing to do with me working at the level I’m trying to compete at. It’s hereditary; it is what it is. It’s nothing I could have done to stop what’s transpiring, nothing I could have taken, or something that I’m just not abiding by.
“It is what it is. Sometimes it just is what it is. I trust God with all my heart, all my soul, and all my mind.”
Sanders has faced numerous health scares over recent years.
In June 2023, Sanders underwent emergency surgery to address ongoing blood clots in his legs. During his time at Jackson State, he previously had two toes amputated due to similar complications.
Sanders is currently in his third season as the head coach at ColoradoGetty Colorado is currently 2-4 through six gamesGettyJust a few months ago, Sanders underwent a series of major surgeries to remove a cancerous bladder tumor, which required the complete removal of the organ and totaled 14 procedures overall.
Despite all of his health issues, Sanders never wavered about whether or not he would return to coach the Buffaloes.
“I was always going to coach again,” Sanders said over the summer. “I wasn’t going to be running down to the hospital once a week with all this on my plate. I didn’t want that.
“I was like, ‘Okay can they bring one of the machines and put them in the office?’ Doctor would look at me like he is crazy. ‘Is he like this when coaches?’ But, we worked it out.”
Colorado is currently 2–4 overall and 0–3 in Big 12 play. It’s Sanders’ third year at the helm, but his first without quarterback Shedeur Sanders and two-way phenom Travis Hunter dominating on both sides of the ball.
There’s still a lot of season left, and Sanders appears determined to be there until the end, every step of the way.
