Fire at Union County Biscuitville caused by people setting off fireworks: Sheriff

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A group of people setting off fireworks caused a local Biscuitville to catch on fire, according to the Union County Sheriff's Office. Due to a prompt response by firefighters and the community, the fire was contained quickly.

On Sunday, October 5, just before midnight, multiple fire departments were called to the Biscuitville on Independence Boulevard near Indian Trail Fariview Road. A fire was found in a void space of the roof and was quickly controlled.

    The restaurant was closed at the time, and no one was inside. No injuries were reported.

    "We would like to extend our appreciation to the neighboring businesses and individuals who quickly reported the fire," wrote Deputy Chief Justin Jackimowicz with the Stallings Fire Department.

    The investigation indicates a group of people were discharging illegal fireworks in the area between the Cook Out and the Biscuitville. Investigators believe the fireworks started a fire on the roof of the Biscuitville, causing more than $250,000 in damage.

    Jackimowicz says eight 911 calls were made within moments of the fire being seen. Due to the prompt 911 calls, firefighters were able to get to the fire within six minutes, which Jackimowicz says significantly kept the fire from spreading further and causing more damage.

    Stallings Fire Station 20, Matthews Fire & EMS, Bakers Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department Inc., Monroe Fire Department and Hemby Bridge Fire Department all responded to the incident.

    Local law enforcement has launched an "extensive" investigation looking for the people who launched the fireworks. Anyone who may have been in the area of has any information, pictures, or videos from the incident is urged to contact UCSO at 704-283-3789 or Crime Stoppers at 704-283-5600.

    "Sheriff Eddie Cathey and Union County Fire Marshal Jon Williams acknowledged the impact this fire has had on Biscuitville employees and the disruption it caused to their livelihoods, and remain dedicated to holding those responsible accountable for their actions," The sheriff's office said in a Facebook post.

    A spokesperson for Biscuitville says a date for reopening has not been set and voiced appreciation for the first responders who helped.
