However, that is exactly what is reportedly going down as the Cleveland Browns are reportedly sending veteran quarteback Joe Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals in a trade. ESPN’s Adam Schefter has the scoop:

The Browns also have Bailey Zappe on the practice squad, but his presence in the grand scheme of things is an afterthought.

To be clear, it’s not as if this Browns-Bengals trade took us completely by surprise. After all, the Browns have a surplus of quarterback options. With Dillon Gabriel taking over the starting role last week and fellow rookie Shedeur Sanders waiting his turn, it felt like Joe Flacco was operating on borrowed time in Cleveland. As for the Bengals, they have been looking for quarterbacking answers since starter Joe Burrow landed on injured reserve last month. Burrow is expected to be out until sometime in December, which made it important for Cincinnati to find help because Jake Browning just wasn’t cutting it.
As a Bears fan, the Joe Flacco trade might not initially register in your world — but it should. Chicago’s football team travels to Ohio to face the Bengals in Week 9. That game looked a little more winnable when Jake Browning — who had more interceptions (8) than touchdowns thrown (6) in four games this season — was set to be operating under center in Cincy. Even at an advanced age, the 40-year-old Flacco probably gives the Bengals a better shot at running a competent offense.
The Bears also play host to the Browns in Week 15 at Soldier Field. Cleveland’s quarterback situation could change a handful of times between now and when that game kicks off. Nevertheless, I like keeping tabs on these things as the NFL season develops. Stay tuned.
