Blakely Hammel from Jacksonville, Florida, has announced her intention to remain in-state to swim and study at the University of Florida in Gainesville. She wrote on social media:
“I am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Florida where I’ll continue my academic and athletic career! I would like to thank my parents for supporting me, my teammates for believing in me and my friends for encouraging me. Thank you to Coach Zubero, Coach Zach and Coach Chris for guiding me through my swimming journey. I am extremely thankful for the UF Coaches; Coach Nesty, Coach Alex, Coach Jack, Coach Whitney and Coach Kristen for assisting me through this process and helping me reach the decision to be a gator. Looking forward to being a part of this incredible team! IT’S GREAT TO BE A FLORIDA GATOR! ”
Hammel attends Episcopal School of Jacksonville and swims year-round under head coach Martin Zubero at Episcopal AmberJax. She specializes in sprint free and fly and is one of our Way Too Early “Best of the Rest” recruits from the high school class of 2027.
As a sophomore last year at the FHSAA Class 1A Swimming and Diving Championships, she won the 50 free with her first sub-23 (22.90), clearing the field by 4-tenths. She also won the 100 free (50.17) and swam on both freestyle relays. She clocked a PB in the 100 free (49.71), 200 free (1:48.48), and 100 fly (54.92) a few months later at Florida Swimming LSC’s Spring Senior Championships. She was a top 8 finisher in all her events, including the 50 free (4th), 100 free (3rd), 200 free (6th), 500 free (7th), 100 fly (6th), and 200 IM (6th).
Hammel started the long-course season with a bevy of best times at Ocala Sectionals. She won the 100 free (56.61) and was runner-up in the 50 free (26.18). Her PBs came in the 200 free (2:00.88, 1st place) and 400 free (4:16.69, 3rd place). She clocked a season-best in the 100 fly, too (1:02.57, 8th place).
She wrapped up the summer at Junior Nationals in Irvine, hitting new PBs in the 200 free (2:00.83, 3rd place) and 400 free (4:15.92, 4th place). She also competed in the 50 free, 100 fly, and 200 IM.

50 free – 22.90 100 free – 49.71 200 free – 1:48.48 500 free – 4:51.09 100 fly – 54.92 200 IM – 2:03.95The Gators had 5 sub-23 sprinters last year (Bella Sims, Addison Reese, Olivia Peoples, Micayla Cronk, and Carly Meeting); only Reese will be there when Hammel arrives.
It took 22.40/48.82/1:46.68/4:44.88 in free, 52.92 in the 100 fly, and 1:59.04 in the 200 IM to score at SEC Championships last season.
