World Grand Prix Darts format explained: Major boasts unique rule that Luke Littler didn’t like

The World Grand Prix of Darts uses a unique format that will add a bit of extra difficulty for stars in Leicester this week.

Belgian Mike de Decker showed that he’s more than comfortable with the changed rules, winning the event in 2024.

However, Luke Littler and Luke Humphries will be out to take his crown this week, along with Michael van Gerwen and more.

All players taking part will have to remain focused though, considering there’s a rare switch to the usual format.

Here’s how things will work in the event this week…

World Grand Prix Darts: Format explained

The World Grand Prix uses a unique format that adds an extra dimension to the tournament each year.

    It uses a double-in, double-out format.

The tournament is the only one on the PDC calendar that does so, requiring players to start and finish on a double.

Typically, players would be able to start with a dart anywhere on the board, whether that be a triple, double or single.

However, in the World Grand Prix, they must begin with a double to get their scoring started during a leg.

It is a format that world champion Littler has admitted he ‘didn’t like’ and why he labels this event one of the ‘toughest tournaments’.

The World Grand Prix sees players clash in set-play matches, with each set being the best of five legs.
