Comic Con 2025. “People sometimes come up to me on the street and quote lines, and honestly, I can’t remember any of it. I saw it when it first came out, but I’ve never watched it again. There are a lot of reasons for that—and one of them is that I miss Heath too much.”
Fans were empathetic to his reasoning.
“One of my favorite movies of all time, I watch it often, but of course I understand why he would have a tough time watching it,” wrote one.
“I have the same issue, love that movie but ones with Heath… it breaks my heart. He was such a tragic loss… I can’t watch it,” related another.
It’s not the first time he spoke so highly of the famed late actor.
“I can tell you that he just had a light that shined off him. He was a movie star, you know?” Bettany told Vulture in a 2021 interview. “Just immediately, you met him, and he shone, as you lot say, and it was very hard not to fall in love with him—I think for anybody. He was a very playful, joyous spirit.”
How Did Heath Ledger Die?
Actor Heath Ledger died just seven years after A Knight’s Tale debuted, in 2008. The actor tragically died of an accidental drug overdose at just 28 years old after starring in an impressive number of roles ranging from the ’90s rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You to the intimate and award-winning Brokeback Mountain.
His untimely death followed a harsh downward spiral in his personal life. He was struggling with the end of his relationship with partner Michelle Williams, with whom he shared a daughter, and was also dealing with addiction and insomnia.

Fans have attributed those circumstances—as well as his deep immersion into the “psychotic” role of the Joker in The Dark Knight—to the mental and physical toll he endured.
“I sat around in a hotel room in London for about a month, locked myself away, formed a little diary, and experimented with voices,” Ledger explained in an interview with Salon.
On January 22, 2008, he was found dead in his New York City apartment. His housekeeper reportedly thought he was sleeping late, but when she eventually opened the door around 2:45 p.m. for his masseuse, they found him unconscious and naked on the floor, according to All That’s Interesting.
He was posthumously given an Academy Award for his role in The Dark Knight. He’s been remembered and revered across Hollywood ever since—and clearly left an impression that no one who worked with him will ever forget.
