Humane Society: 18 dogs rescued from Geneva property, Eight animals found dead

GENEVA, N.Y. — Two people are facing charges after the Ontario County Humane Society says they rescued 18 dogs from a property in Geneva, two of which have since died.

Investigators say they found eight young, terrier-type dogs in a camper trailer in the driveway of a home on Avenue B, living with a large amount of dog feces on the floor and little food or water. Investigators say they also found 10 dogs living inside the home in similar conditions.

The humane society started investigating last Wednesday after getting a report of several dogs appearing malnourished and living in unsanitary conditions. The next day, they searched the property with the help of the Geneva police, fire, and code enforcement.

While searching the trailer, investigators needed to use a breathing apparatus and a special suit to protect themselves from the strong ammonia odor. In the home, dog feces had filled the first and second floors. The humane society says they also found eight dead and decomposing animals inside an unpowered freezer chest in the kitchen.

The rescued dogs were taken to the Happy Tails Animal Shelter, where veterinary staff determined that many were flea-ridden, suffering from fur loss, and severely emaciated. Two died on Friday night despite getting treatment. Those two dogs and the animals found dead in the home are being sent to the Cornell Animal Diagnostic Center to determine their cause of death.

The humane society identified the dogs’ owners as Brian Hess, 65, and RoseMarie Bruno-Hess, 68. Both have been charged with aggravated animal cruelty, a felony. They were issued an appearance ticket for Geneva City Court and surrendered ownership of the dogs to the shelter.

The shelter says they’ll continue to provide treatment to the dogs and will put them up for adoption once they’re healthy.
