Off the Charts: Successful Sequences and Productive Passing Moves on MD7

Off the Charts highlights players whose output in a specific area has been outstanding. For Matchday 7 of the 2025-26 Premier League season, we look at some impressive passing moves.

In last week’s Off the Charts, we highlighted the players and teams in the 2025-26 Premier League that have made the referees the busiest so far this season.

Today, we’re focusing on something more aesthetically pleasing to football fans: passing moves leading to shots and goals.

Let’s dive into Off the Charts for Matchday 7…

    Manchester United Making Moves

It might only be a rise of four places in the Premier League table, but Saturday’s victory over Sunderland saw Manchester United move in the right direction.

It wasn’t the only Man Utd move that made headlines this weekend, though, as Mason Mount scored his first Premier League goal at Old Trafford for the club following a slick passing sequence to put the Red Devils 1-0 up on Saturday afternoon.

Mount’s goal finished a sequence of 18 uninterrupted passes, which was the most leading up to a Man Utd goal in league competition since Bruno Fernandes’ strike versus Burnley in September 2023 (also 18). It also equalled the most passes leading to a Premier League goal in 2025-26, matching the record set by the first goal of the season, scored by Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitiké against Bournemouth in August.

The move for Mount’s eighth-minute strike started with Leny Yoro’s tackle on 06:43 and involved seven other players between then and Mount finishing off the move 61 seconds later – the longest passing move leading to a Premier League goal in 2025-26 so far, based on time.

    Late Drama at Stamford Bridge

Liverpool suffered their third consecutive defeat in eight days across all competitions after Estêvão’s dramatic added-time goal for Chelsea on Saturday evening.

It was the Brazilian teenager’s first goal in the Premier League, as he became the second youngest Brazilian to score in the Premier League (18y 163d), after Rafael for Man Utd in November 2008 (18y 122d).

That goal saw 10 different Chelsea players involved in the move, with Marc Guiu the only Blues’ player on the pitch at the time not to play a part in the sequence.

The urgency was clear with time nearly up at Stamford Bridge. Despite 10 players involved in the sequence, the move lasted just 28 seconds. Only Marc Cucurella had more than one touch (2) of the ball in the sequence.

It was just the third goal this season to involve at least 10 players after Erling Haaland’s 61st-minute strike against Wolves on 16 August (10) and Rio Ngumoha’s late winner at St James’ Park for Liverpool against Newcastle on 25 August, which involved all 11 of Liverpool’s players on the pitch at that time.

    Pep’s Pass & Move

Manchester City got the job done with a 1-0 away win at Brentford on Sunday, but it wasn’t pretty.

Their xG total of 0.85 was their lowest in a competitive game in 2025-26, while only in their draw at Arsenal on 21 September (5) did they attempt fewer shots than they did at the Gtech Community Stadium (10). Just one of those came in the second half, as City failed to attempt a single shot on target after half-time.

They did display some slick passing moves in the win, however.

Tijjani Reijnders attempted a shot from outside the box in the 15th minute of the match following a move of 39 uninterrupted passes. That was the longest passing move leading to a shot this season in the Premier League, both in terms of passes and time in possession (95 seconds).

Had that attempt flown into the back of the net, it would have been the longest passing move leading to a Premier League goal since Rúben Dias’ seventh-minute strike for City against Nottingham Forest in September 2023, which finished off a move of 46 passes.

For reference, the last Premier League shot that followed a longer passing move than the one that led to Reijnders’ attempt this weekend came via Brighton in March 2024. Julio Enciso’s 87th-minute miss following a passing move of 65 passes without a Nottingham Forest player getting the ball off Brighton lasted over two minutes (126 seconds).

City had another go at trying to beat that in the second half, and despite only attempting one shot in the entire 45 minutes after half-time, at least they made it an interesting move to analyse.

Oscar Bobb’s 53rd-minute shot was blocked by Brentford defender Aaron Hickey following a sequence of 30 passes – the only other passing move of 30+ passes leading to a shot in the Premier League this season.
