Missouri Hires Recently-Graduated Tennessee Swimmer Kate McCarville As Assistant Coach

By Sean Griffin on SwimSwam

The University of Missouri has announced the hiring of Kate McCarville as a new assistant coach with the program. This is the start of McCarville’s coaching career after swimming four years on the varsity at SEC rivals Tennessee.

McCarville fills the vacant position left by Noah Mitchell, who joined the team as a volunteer assistant in June 2022 and served as a graduate assistant coach from August 2023 through the end of last season. She will work primarily with the distance freestyle and IM groups, developing individualized training plans for specific championship season goals and assisting in operational and recruiting duties.

McCarville, who wrapped up her own swimming career this March, contributed to the Vols’ 2022 SEC title and runner-up finishes in 2023 and 2024. She also helped the team place eighth at NCAA Championships in 2023, fourth in 2024, and fifth in 2025.

The 2022 SEC Championships saw McCarville take 10th in the 500 free (4:43.10), 14th in the 400 IM (4:13.51), and 16th in the 200 fly (1:57.88), with her time in the 500 representing a new career best.

She broke 4:40 for the first time the following season with a 4:41.85 in the prelims of SECs, then shattered that mark with a 4:38.99 to win the ‘B’ final and advance to the NCAA meet. She also finished ninth in the 1650 free with a lifetime best of 16:05.58 and 20th in the 400 IM with a season-best 4:13.69. At Nationals, she touched 12th in the 500 free with a time of 4:40.54, then took 41st in the 1650 (16:32.05) and 55th in the 200 free (1:47.67).

McCarville continued her momentum into 2024 by breaking 4:40 for the second time in the 500, taking sixth at the SEC Championships with a time of 4:39.85. She also hit the wall sixth in the 1650 with a 16:10.44 and 23rd in the 200 fly (1:59.02). At NCAAs, she clocked a season-best 16:09.57 to place 25th in the mile and notched 4:44.38 for 46th in the 500.

At the 2025 SECs, she took eighth in the 500 free (4:41.01), 10th in the 1650 free (16:07.62), and 12th in the 400 IM (4:11.04), before wrapping up her career at NCAAs with a 32nd-place finish in the 1650 free (16:15.94), 42nd in the 400 IM (4:16.39), and 49th in the 500 free (4:44.49).

Outside of collegiate competition, McCarville competed at both the 2021 and 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials.

At the 2021 Trials, which were divided into two waves due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she raced in Wave I, winning both the 200 IM (2:15.09) and 400 IM (4:47.15) with personal bests. Since she finished top two in at least one event, she advanced to Wave II, where she secured 31st in the 200 fly (2:15.64), 37th in the 400 IM (4:53.70), and 39th in the 200 IM (2:17.80).

Three years later, at the 2024 Trials, McCarville clocked a lifetime best of 4:11.26 to place 14th in the 400 free and posted an 8:44.17 for 22nd in the 800 free, her fastest of the season. She also recorded 16:46.11 for 25th in the 1500 free and touched 2:00.72 and 2:14.16 to finish 36th in the 200 free and 200 fly, respectively.

McCarville graduated summa cum laude with a double major in therapeutic recreation and psychology, and a minor in leadership studies. According to Missouri Athletics’ press release, McCarville held a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout her undergraduate studies, was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, and received the Lady Vol Student-Athlete Academic Achiever Award.

She was also a recipient of the University of Tennessee’s Torchbearer Award, the highest honor given to undergraduate students. Each year, it recognizes seven to 10 seniors from the entire university’s graduating class who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, and dedicated service to others.

McCarville joins a staff that includes associate head coach Alec Hayden, head diving coach Kyle Bogner, assistant diving coach Mohab Ishak, and assistant swim coaches Andrew Sansoucie and Madeline Banic.

The Mizzou women placed 10th out of 13 teams at the 2025 SEC Championships, while the men were 10th out of 11 teams. Eight women advanced to the NCAA Championships, but no athletes scored. On the men’s side, 11 athletes advanced to NCAAs where the team took 36th, with junior Collier Dyer and sophomore Tommaso Zannella combining for 10 points on the diving boards.
